The highs are hovering around 0C, and the nights are around -6C. Time to uncover my bamboo. Here is my Rufa, year 4 and ready to explode:

I didnt do any soil amendments when planting or anything until last year. Just a few spoonfuls of blood/bone. Im going to baby both of them this year to see what happens when I pump em full of nutrients. I need more Fargesia!

I transplanted a bunch of yellow groove about 14 ft tall on e a warm day in dec. dont think most of it made it so I will have to go collect more and replant after it shoots. most of my other types are doing great and have been uncovered all winter yours look wonderful hope you get a large batch of shoots this year.

Looks good and should be in great shape in a few more months...
I noticed(much to my surprise)that the wood on the Butterfly bushes is still alive and for sure the-branches on the-Black bamboo is too.

I have some alata. Ill be uncovering that on sunday. It is doing better then the last 2 years (this is its 3rd season) It had quite a few shoots last year.
Thanks Jim. Good to hear about your butterfly bush. Ive thought about trying it here. I bet it would survive under the snow. Even better to hear about your P nigra! I hope it upsides for you.

butterfly bush. Ive thought about trying it here. I bet it would survive under the snow
Jesse, I've got a couple and since they're pruned down to the ground end of March, it doesn't matter if the top (above the snow) dies.
Below the snow will be fine, and they only bloom on new wood, so that's perfect for you.
Just don't prune them in Fall...ever.
The hollow canes let the cold travel all the way down to the roots.

My Butterfly bushes came back last year and bloomed from 2 year old wood...shoots-
to bad the drought was so bad or they would have grown taller-maybe this year!
