Its been nice. Even with one night this week apparently dropping to -8C, that still isnt bad. Snow is finally almost gone.... I had to check on the phyllostachys areosulcata alata. Turns out, its near mint. Only some leaf burn, where I was too lazy and didnt put enough mulch:

The shoots last June were double the size of the year before that. Im hoping for the same thing. Even half that would be nice....

Yup. So far very reliable too. My Fargesia starts to shoot the first ot second week of May, and the phyllostachys shoots reliable the first week of June.

Its really hard to say. I only grow Rufa and this alata. On bambooweb there is quite the discussion going on about fargesia hardiness. Some there think rufa isnt as hardy as many people claim (one of those "relative" discussions). It can take quite a bit in my experience.

The Phyllostachys on the other hand got hammered its first winter because I protected it like an idiot. Last summer it put out 6 shoots or so, one was at least double the size of the existing culms. I figured it wouldnt be warm, long enough for the alata, but if I have a repeat of last year this season, I may have to second guess that notion. Generally speaking, Fargesia SHOULD do best here, due to my "cool" climate.

'cool climate'? that's an understatement. 😀 If you stand on top of your house you'll probably see permanent ice glaciers to the north. 😆

PS, Holly seeds wrapped up and will be in mail today. 8)
