coming out of winter and the Sequoia a couple days ago-not bad for a drought year!

March 5, 2012

If you look to the far left-you can see what the Washy was covered with last winter! 0:

what a beauty! How tall is the Sequoiadendron now and how many inches (or should I say feet) did it grow this season??

I see your Washy leaves are above the railing now.......nice.

Yea...and thats in a mild winter...did not lose it's top though....

It was the first part damaged though when the first cold hit,
these just don't know when to quit growing here and a week
of rain and 70s at least this week will keep it going...

5"+ of rain in the past week isn't slowing it any either!

Thanks Tim

I think it was 4' tall coming out of winter and is now approaching 8',
so,maybe around 7.5' right now but I have not measured it in a few weeks 😀

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

In a strange way-I think if I had to leave this place I would miss the Sequoia the most 😕

Hi Jim,

I moved from Rhode Island to Mass. in 2003 and the new owner's of my old house cut down the 13' tall Sequoiadendron and 5' tall Cunninghamia immediately........that blew.

Great shots, Jim! I am likely going to keep one of the Sequoiadendrons that I have and plant it in my front yard.

Tim, how did you find the growth of the Sequoiadendron in your area?

Hi Cameron,

I purchased a small 6" tall Sequoiadendron back in 1997. It was 13 feet tall in 2003. I think it grew 3 feet in 2003 and only 1" the first season. There is a 100' tall specimen in Rhode Island which was planted in 1911 or so. So they are rock hardy around here. I've seen specimens inland too like Smithfield, Rhode Island and Glocester, Rhode Island.

Wow, that is pretty impressive growth! I have heard about the 100' tree (I think Bill also posted pics before) in RI. There was a fairly tall tree around an hour away from me, and in a colder zone. Apparently it was doing pretty well, but it blew down in a freak windstorm a couple of years ago.
