I'm testing Metapanax delavayi this year for hardiness....I'll protect this winter and see what happens. Last week the newer leaves got fried.....not a good start.

Tim,

The fried leaves make it look like Fatsia ... sorry. 😆

Was it recently planted? or in ground all summer?

Pretty plant.

Hi Barb,

the Metapanax is closely related to Fatsia........I planted it out in late May-ish.......it grew another 3 feet during summer......very aggressive.

a couple more photos of the Metapanax.......it's even larger now.......must have grown a lot in September too.

Good it's aggressive if it's so tender.
Pretty plant.

Tim ... what temps did you get to kill that new growth?

Hi Andy

I think the new leaves on the Metapanax delavayi got fried during our first freeze......likely 30F (-1C) or so. The Metapanax davidii has no damage on any leaves and our low has been 22F (-5.5C).....but the M. davidii does not have any 'new' leaves.

The M. delavayi older leaves still look fine and we dropped to 22F (-5.5C).

Thanks for that information Tim. Lets hope the stems stay green at least. BTW have you got an update on that survivor Schefflera Taiwaniana X Gracilis. Hows it growing?

Hi Andy,

I had 7 of those Schefflera Taiwaniana X Gracilis hybrids.........I transplanted them back in August and 5 died within 3 weeks. The 6th was looking bad so I cut off the plant from the roots and placed it in a glass with a little water at the bottom.......hoping it will root. It's been 2+ months now with no roots but it's still green.....so perhaps it will send out a root soon.

I do have 1 plant which survived.........I learned my lesson. 🙁

Tim

Metapanax delavayi still looks great with a low temp of -0.2F (-18C) on top of the snow and +4.9F (-15C) measured five feet above the snow. No supplemental heat except for the nice 'greenhouse'.

Great work, Tim! This gives me peace of mind for when I try out a Metapanax next season.
