Some loquat pics sending new shoots in my basement, Eriobotrya japonica

And one protected from the wind with landscape fabric outside in the ground now for about two months. (A test)

And lastly, unrelated, is our avocado tree in the basement sending new shoots.

Nice pics!

I've also got around 5 loquat seedlings in my basement 😆

Hey, congrats Cameron and Adam on the loquats!

I'd better check my avocado in the cold barely-heated building.
Doubt it's growing.
Probably shivering.

nice to see a Loquat test in ON. Keep us posted on it's progress. My parents live in Rockville, MD a zone 7a location. There's a 8 footer in the neighbor's yard.

Really? I was wondering whether they'd make it here.

Hi Jack,

I'll have to visit again so I can get an update on that Loquat. It appeared A OK when I observed it.

I have heard that they will make it here, but not fruit. Dr Francko says so in his book. But I have never seen one around.

Are they fast growers?

from seed, they grow very fast. My tallest plant is 16 inches tall at 10 months after germination. Not sure how fast they grow as they continue on to getting woody.

I have sown a new batch of seeds. So lucky to have found loquat fruit at a nearby supermarket. I bought them all!

I bought them all

So it's YOU driving up the price of fresh imported fruit 😆

Somewhere here, years ago, we had a thread on starting seeds from the grocery store.
I started a Starfruit, but it died the first summer outdoors.
A nice winter project nevertheless.

Forgot to get a pic of my 18-inch tall avocado started last year...(in soil, not water).

I have 4 Avocados going right now. Three from soil with the fourth in water. All have germinated. The soil ones are getting very leggy as its in the basement.

The one in water is strange. It has sprouted and immediatly flowered. What's up with that?

Never heard of that.
Obviously a keeper, just to see what it does next.

Planted up at least 40 more fresh loquat seeds yesterday right out of the fruit. Four of the seeds were already growing inside the fruit (which had been in our fridge for the past two months)!
