Here's a few photos of the largest Southern Magnolia in Rhode Island that I know of. It's plastered against a south facing building.

Seeds in one pod. Not sure why only one pod???? Do you see the seeds in the middle of the photo? This is the only pod I saw with seeds in it.

That is a gorgeous tree....... IT isnt too much of a surprise to see one there is it?

Birds and other small animals enjoy the seeds, whom are the trees primary seed dispersers...... I hope you managed to take some seed!

Southern Magnolias are very rare in our area. I know of a specimen in Exeter, RI; Johnston, RI; and Swansea, MA. These are likely the hardy cultivars. There is another at the Roger Williams Botanical Center but I've seen that one brown-out after winter too! I think that the problem in our area is that people buy a 'normal' souther magnolia and it gets severe die back and then they cut it down.....it has a 'non hardy' name to most people. The most common SM sold in nurseries is 'little gem' which is not hardy here.

It appears this large specimen was planted between 1962 and 1972......see link here with aerial phtotos.

Just think Tim some plant nut in 30 years will see your yard, and go "WHAT HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE"? :p

Nice detective skills too. Ive been trying to do the same thing here. There is apparently a huge Mulberry tree here, randomly planted in some brush.... They are hardy to zone 5, and the area its in is said to be zone 3

Excellent sleuthing job, Tim!
I love Google satellite.
The only downside is that local governments ALSO use it to discover building renos for which there had been no permit. 👿 😆 😆

Southern Magnolias are very rare in our area.

How hardy are they? And not to sound dumb, but is there Northern Magnolias? I see them every now and then in the Boise Idaho area. 😀

If there are, I think I've got one, Aaron.

Thanks Aaron.
It doesn't have the huge shiny magnolia leaves, but I do recall it being tagged Star Magnolia.
In the days when plant labels actually were accurate... 😉

It has seen brutal cold (-30C -22F) with very little snow when young.
