These annuals are a lot of work (just like any pole bean), but
as soon as they're in bloom (4 months after starting in styro cups), it was worth the effort. 8)

They'll be this pretty until the first frost turns them black

Hi Steve, thanks.
Like all bean seeds, they germinated quickly, within several days.
I soaked them overnite in tepid water; the next morning the beans were swollen and
ready to be planted in individual styrofoam coffee cups.

Beans don't like cool soil so I always start them in styro cups.
They also don't like to have their roots disturbed while transplanting, so if the
styro cups are allowed to dry out a day before planting, they just slip out easily
when inverted.

Brought the styro cups in every night while it was still cool,
then planted them soon as frost danger was past.

Took four months to get them up the posts wrapping around a polypropylene string.
Lots of water and fertilizer (bloom fert...large phosph)
They don't really grow much until heat really hits.

There's one--and only one--downside to Dolichos lablab.
We had a heck of a windstorm for an hour early today.
There are blossoms all over the patio !!!! 👿

And if rain and wind hits at the same time, these vines can get very heavy,
so only POLYPROPYLENE string is recommended.
I used butcher twine one year...oops, the whole thing came down in a rainstorm when the string broke.

I'm off to shop-vac a million blossoms off the concrete patio 👿

Sounds like Kansas weather! Thanks for the suggestions, around here everything needs to be tied down securely 🙂

Good luck getting everything back in order!

Whew...wind's still blowing and after vacuuming the blossoms from the patio,
now there's more to pick up.
Looks like a hawaiian wedding walk, ha ha 😕

Our temps are less than yours, and I'm grateful it's no longer sweltering hot.
But that's why your stuff is growing so well, I bet.
