Espalier. Plant identification.

This is a seven year old plant. I found it growing beside a (plum?) pit in our yard. Maybe it is a stone fruit like a plum, is what I thought.
Immediately began to train it as an espalier. But I still have no real answer to its species. Any ideas?

Still guessing apple, though the leaves should be considerably larger.
It obviously had some stress (enough water? any fertilizer?)

And...I see now that you're using Flickr.
But will update procedure on the other post tomorrow if your posting bombs.
