Tim, you should treat A. ecklonis as a die-back perennial, since it's a "grass Aloe". Let it die back to the ground, and provide some protection (i. e. mulch). It should resprout in the spring/summer.

we'll find out how the Aloe does since I have 2 outside inside my Yucca protection 'tubes'. We'll see if they can return.
