Well the U.S. dollar is now worth 93 cents vs. 1 Canadian dollar. Great news for shopping down over the border. The lines going over are getting longer as people are looking for American bargains. I have already ordered some things online and am getting them for less than half price here. Great value for travel as well.

I am assuming you are ordering palms?
If so where from?
Most places will not ship to Canada.
Wes North Vancouver Zone 8b/9a
Keats Island BC Zone 8a
Palm Springs CA Zone 9b/10a
As well, not much price reflection has been evident in Canada. We continue to get ripped off dispite the strong Canadian dollar here in our own country. Too bad we have to drive south (heavy border waits) to get a reasonable purchase.
Cheers, Barrie.
Wes I did some online shoppping for Christmas ,got some great deals. I have ordered palms in the past and have recieved them from the U.S. with phyto. You are correct when you say most will not ship here because of the hasle with customs. Wes it sure must be better to go to Maui with our dollar like it is. I stayed away from Hawaii and went to Mexico because of the exchange in the past. Will be looking for a trip there in the spring.

The US is in economic trouble. Oil prices have finally caught up to us and nobody is in the postion to absorb the price increases. The average American is really hurting this winter. Many people are having to choose between staying warm and eating. This is no joke!! We are heading into the greatest reccession since the late 70's.
I know and it is scary. Our economies are quite tightly connected especially in the auto industry. Now that reality has set in our currencies are about equal. It is affecting us only a little but Ontario will feel it harder.
I thank Americans for the price of gasoline. While the price of oil is in the $90/barrel range, gasoline remains in the $.93/litre range here in Edmonton. Last year $80/barrel oil resulted in $1.10/litre gasoline. Right now there is a surplus of gasoline. We did our part over the past year by moving from a 3.3l V6 to a 2.5l 4 and a 2.5l 4 to a 50 CC scooter. But it was Americans sucking in their belts that resulted in a surplus. The forecasts call for $1.30+/litre gasoline in the spring once production slows and the surplus disappears.
My wife likes the scooter. It gets about 75 days per litre( 1 gallon per summer).
There will be some oil price relief over the next 5 years as the 2 new oil sands plants in Fort McMurray come on line and when the Peace River Oil sands plant comes on line in 8 or 9 years. In the short term we will have to be careful how much we burn and use it more efficiently.

You don't have to be crazy to grow palms in Alberta..... But it helps

I wish it was that simple. Americans have cut consumption pretty dramatically the last year or so. The oil companies still raised prices claiming they were losing profits due to less demand!!!!! 😯 They got us coming and going. the day we become less dependent on oil is the day we all start heading to a brighter future.
With the currency at par canucks are flocking to the border cities in the USA (where I am) for everything from soup to nuts..
Its great!...Its good to help the local Buffalo economy and for the Canadian peasants on the other side of the river who have been ripped off by one too many middlemen...
Here's to the pending amero--hush-hush--- and North American Union...its already in the works folks! (but no-one's supposed to know)...lol...

I got bad news for ya, Palmettoman. The Pacific North West Union has been not so hush hush for almost 20 years and we still have to wait at a border crossing. 😥

Tell me where you don't have to line up for things today Allen?...
I was being sarcastic with the hush/hush..that was meant that its no big secret there are ongoing discussions between Canada/Mexico/USA and the big corps etc on this pending union...(monetary/political/economic)...
The border is a joke..its there has a revenue collection business under the disguise of national security or whatever you want to call it...
Monsanto covets Canadian water so they can irrigate the big year round farms they are operating in northern Mexico...
The foundations have been laid already (agree or disagree)..The borders will mean dink all in 20 years...
Google amero when you get a sec...

Ah, Monsanto.
One of my fav companies to hate after what they have done--and continue to do--to farmers who elect NOT to grow Genetically Modified "organisms".
Thank God Monsanto isn't a government...people are last on their list.
Canadians love to shop in the U.S. because of the selection, not just prices.
Here we get dick for choice.
Amero? or Amerianada?
Hopefully when it happens, it'll be better than what NAFTA brought Canada: nada.

Your correct Barb about choice but its also the savings$$..
We have big selections in Buffalo because they have a large population in the entire Niagara area..
I beg to differ but Mexico and Canada are far better off in NAFTA...Its a no-brainer...Maybe it benefited central Canada better than BC but it definately created jobs and a sub service economy for US companies...
Not to mention we began to see more goods at affordable prices thanks to NAFTA...
Palmettoman Z6-Ajax, On
Lumber faired poorly after NAFTA primarily because the US ignored the agreement.
We also had a federal government that cared little about what happened west of Ontario. The Canadian government let the US get away with screwing the lumber industry in Western Canada.
The same applies for the west coast fishing industry.
Unfortunately a lot of people blame NAFTA when the blame lies with the US and Canadian governments of the time.

The Canadian government screws BC over like nobody else ever did.
My point re NAFTA was what did BC get? countervail, duties, tariffs. Job losses. A chance to lose control of water?
Never mind.
The 15+ year old Multilateral Agreement on Investment is the real bad booger.
It'll eventually wipe out the lower half of the "middle class", relegating them (us) to poverty.
We won't have any money left to rescue Canadian chartered banks from the mess they're getting themselves into.
Zero downpayment schemes through CMHC (ostensibly to finance our own "retirement"). Duh!
This'll be one heck of a roller coaster ride.
We'll pay at both ends of that ride. 😥

I agree..the feds screwed over the west for political reasons... one after the next...
The west has always played third fiddle in this silly confederation hasn't it?...
Well..with population shifts happening right before our very eyes..it won't be long before things start shifting in the wests favor and they hopefully will have a larger say on policy and decision making...
