how do the birds know a quake is coming?? Strange birds know but humans have no clue.

That's why I made the animal report. I suspect it is an urban legend.

Nothing but 3's for earthquakes this evening and those don't count, right? Strongest today was a 4, and again, I'm from out west and say it has to be a 5 to be worth talking about. 😀

I just checked out the USGS earthquake data. The 5.6 was not the 1st quake in your area....there were a load of others just prior. Did you fell the 'smaller' ones before the 'big' one?

Great stuff!

It's been shaking all weekend. The "big" one last night (the 5.6) was the only one that seemed worth noting.

I just checked out the USGS maps of the quake. It was centered just north of Shawnee, OK. I spent 2 summers in Shawnee, OK when in college (summer break).....what's the 'odds'? PS, I've never been hotter than those OK summers......just BRUTAL. We generally get less than 10 days which hit 90F here in Mass. Any day over 85F is 'hot' here....LOL.

In summer, I look for days with lows of 85 F. That feels nice, until 7 am or so.

Sid,
I copy everything from you I can! Hoping for snow 😆
Jesse,
I'm not sure if "zone 4 for a few hours" counts as "zone 4" but many dead plants sure say it does. 😯
Basically, though, 2011 has been a heck of a year here on "Terdal Farm" no matter how you figure it.
Tim,
yes, a few. I'm from the west coast so to me it doesn't count 'til it gets to 5+ (remember, it is a log scale, so the 5.6 yesterday evening was MUCH stronger than the 4.7 earlier in the day).
Anyway, I used to say about cold, tornados, hail, heat, drought that compared to Oregon, at least we don't have earthquakes. Now I'm wondering how fast I can get outa here.....
--Erik

Im only asking because as far as im aware, the zones are rated based on record low temps, not average lows. Other wise id be zone 6...

how do the birds know a quake is coming

That's what the scientists are studying.
We have lots to learn...

But realistically, a half-minute "warning" isn't going to be of any benefit.
