A foliage camouflage, most I've seen around here have the pseudo eyes on the wings.

Steve, that is both stunning and weird! Great you had your camera ready.

Likely blew in on one of those twisters!
Wonder what it looked like as a caterpillar...

Here some info on them:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actias_luna

There are pictures of the lifestages at the bottom.

They're common but rarely seen since they only have a 1 week life spand as an adult and they're nocturnal. So you can only find them in their hiding spots during the day.

Steve,
looks like your cycads and palms are safe, as they feast on:
Betula (Birch)
Alnus (Alder)
Diospyros (Persimmon)
Liquidambar (Sweet gum)
Carya and Annamocarya (Hickory)
Juglans (Walnut)
Rhus (Sumac)

Barb,
It's nice seeing these around each year, if they wanted to snack on some Palms or Cycads, I'd let them 😀

Also, thanks for the list! We do have some Black Walnuts here.

All within reason, 😀 some of these insects may become the future pollinators for species far removed from habitat.

Barb,

Just a matter of curiosity, I'm hoping to eventually get some things to set seed.
Both of my Aloes were blooming at the same time this year, wasp and dragonflies took care of those. 8)
