Long story short :
"Our aim is to go beyond a single general map and develop potential range maps for individual species of trees, shrubs and perennial flowers. Our approach is to develop a climatic profile for each plant using new continent-wide climate models. These climatic profiles will be mapped giving an indication of the possible range of each species"

Saw the site last year; hope it flies, but haven't signed up.
Microclimates can screw it up, as have all other zone parameters previously.
But maybe a good thing will be that northern nurseries will stop selling hydrangeas here.

Whats wrong with hydrangea? They survive here, and there are some big old ones here. The ones that dont make it in my area are Macrophylla and oak leaf. The rest make it in my area.....

Hydrangeas don't like hot dry weather, 7.2 soil (I know..that can be changed) and strong winds.
I'd give my eye teeth to have a laceleaf hydrangea, but no go, even on the north side of building.
Yet nurseries sell them, probably lots of them, as they need constant replacing 😆
If nurseries would stop selling them, I wouldn't be tempted to buy the beauties every couple of years and try again. 😆

Yup, my place 😆
...and I should've said LACECAP hydrangea...stunning!

IF you were slightly warmer I would say try one of the more southern types (oakleaf in shade), or even the climbing one (which may still work there in full shade).
I think the idea behind this, as you mentioned is to make it easier to sift through possible plant species. I think the canadian hardiness map already takes some of the criteria into account, but there have been too many complaints about our map being inaccurate ( too warm or too cold). Youd have to assume that the more people add their info, the better the map will eventually become.

Barb, it's not about the canadian hardiness map but the oakleaf hydrangea as well as Hydrangea anomala (the climbing one) grow very well in my place which is I assume is hotter in summer, colder in winter but (to be honest) is not drier than your place. Annually we have 500-600 ml of precipitation. The Nikko Blue Hortensia does well with no winter protection here too. And it doesn't care about pH. So there is a hardiness and a hardiness.

especially with any winter gains from GW ... it'll take time.
I'm just tired of spending $$$ for stuff that croaks.
Igor, you're fortunate to have sufficient rain which, in itself, tends to lower the pH for hydrangea success.
I should simply learn to like something else other than Lacecap hydrangea to minimize disappointment.
So I grow palms 😕 😆 😆
