Since I am new to the forum this is my first post and very glad I found this thread.. Alot of good stuff in here. I have just recently ( the last year ) amped up my palm collection. I have mostly been into tropicals and only had some palm seedlings but I am comming along fast. I just recently found a new greenhouse about 50 miles from me that overwinter house plants for a fee.. 15 ft triangle palms all kinds of rare tropical palms I was blown away. This was the only thing I wanted and they were selling

var. raphis that I got for 60 bucks..has about 20 canes in the pot so it need repotting asap. I will look forward to adding to this thread as much as I can.

seem Lowes and home depots vary alot. I am in zone 6 and my local ones don't get half the stuff that people get in zone 5.. maybe this next year will be a better one. I did get this pygmy date on clearance for 10 dollars the other day. there are plenty of cat and majestys left but I can't be the one to save them all

Welcome Mike!! you will LOVE this site for information and help. I'm somewhat of a newbie here myself but learn something new every day.

Check out www.junglemusic.net when your ready to find some really amazing and hard to come by palms. Phil, the owner there is great to deal with on mail order palms.

Hey, Mike, welcome aboard.
What city in the USA are you located?
once we know, then we'll hound you to plant Needle and Trachy palms outdoors so you too can suffer building winter protection. 😉
And yuccas....

found a new greenhouse about 50 miles from me that overwinter house plants for a fee.

That's a neat idea only now and then heard.
Should be more of that...

Nice Rhapis and PDP...

I can't be the one to save them all

hang around, and you'll be trying to 😆 😆

Again, welcome.
Barb

Glad to be here. the palm bug has really bit me hard. I live in between Cincinnati Oh a zone 5 and Louisville KY a 6B. my acual house says a 6B which is about right. last few winters the lowest I had was around 12 degrees. I was acually looking at jungle music earlier but its kind of overwhelming 😀 just more than my pocket can handle. I have a small list of ones I want to try and get and keep planted outside the rest will be indoors. I am trying to hold off till it warms up but its hard. I acually got a 1 gallon fortuni in the mail this morning..10 bucks so it wasn't a bad deal at all. I'm going on vacation to st. pete in June and want to drop by Ken's palms to see what I can get and send home..if I don't find what I want then a nice order from Jungle music will be in order. look forward to contributing to the board.

Mike,

I thought the same thing when I first found Jungle Music..affordability since they ship their plants in the growing containers.(shipping cost) really, in the end I've discovered it's the only way to go. The stress that any plant goes through even when buying locally and the change in environment...re-potting too soon, change of soils etc all add to that stress. I've had 100% success with Jungle Music in all the palms I've bought from Phil. I always leave them in their containers for a while before putting in pots as well. About 1/2 of plants I've bought mail order from other vendors that arrived bare root...have died. Lesson learned the hard way. Phil is just a phone call or email away for advice as well as to what kind of palm is best for you, or if you have a question about one you have purchased. Replies are so quick, I wonder if he ever sleeps!

Right now I have two palms I just bought from him that he is holding until weather warms and safer to ship(Omaha) a Blue Hesper Palm and a Blue Pindo Palm. It's nice that he offers that service so you can catch stuff like I did when on special.

I'm about one more palm away from divorce as my wife is going crazy with all the palms I have in the house, garage..and in the greenhouse and I'm very new at this like you, the bug really bit me hard. I just tell her I could have worse hobbies.

thats kind of the way I put it to my wife..I could be out at a strip club..or in the garden you pick 🙂 . She doesn't like them in the house but is tolerating it pretty well so far. I try to get the mail when shes at work that way she doesn't notice I got a new one since she can't tell the difference in them all. I was reading over Phils blog. I think I missed some of the good specials but I'll try him again in the spring. I am expanding my hardy tropicals at the moment so more stays out than comes in and then I'll get back to palms..or just do them both LOL. I do like that blue pindo was thinking about that one myself. I really want somthing like a fox tail or similar with a nice crown shaft don't have any of them...I'll let the new fortuni I got yesterday sink in then I'll get somthing differant next week. seems my lowes and HD and walmarts just don't stock the palms like other peoples do but I wish they did. I got a needle last year at walmart and the only palm that was at lowes was a med. fan green form and I passed on it when I shouldn't have. do you have a list of the ones you currently have looks like a few 😀

I love Foxtails...my favorite palm! yet I've come to discover they are TOUGH to bring inside and overwinter. I have one about 8ft tall, and it defoliated and is now just a 8ft tall spear. Another member in Kansas has one he's kept for years and it defoliates he said over each winter he brings it inside.

Now we have a moderator here in the forums, Barb from Canada who has a nice size Foxtail that she is overwintering in a outside shed where it can get pretty cool..yet hers in her pics looks great so far.

Watch Phil's blog every day, as he has specials all the time.

My wife has her romance novels...I have Phil's blog!

I'll keep an eye on it. Do those prices on special included shipping or that is an added cost?

Added cost.(depends on zip code) Also, they come packed really well as well as certificates of health. Sometimes though, if you buy more than one or if you buy seedlings along with a larger plant they can ship them together and save. He is very prompt on shipping.

The other thing is that when you order it has to be done by phone and Phil himself takes your order as he may want to ask what your plans are with the palm you want. He does that in case your ordering a Palm that may not do well in your area or what you have planned so may discourage you from buying it. Last thing he wants to do is sell someone a palm that will just languish and die.

I hope you know when your FedEx guy comes through the neighborhood so you can get them off your porch before you wife comes home.

I get everything sent to a P.O. Box that way I can slide by any time and pick them up...well hidden in the trunk till I can put them in with the rest of the mess. I did see a few I am very interested in so I'll be getting with him real soon. once I have everything where I want it in the garden I can use new palms for fill in.

Found a new nursery not far from me, and they have A LOT of palms, and even a "bargain corner" where I found two palms, one of which pictured below known as a
"Jungle Drum" or also as "Panama Hat" Palm. They had 3, so bought 1 for $8.00.

The other palm I need my truck to pick up as it was maybe 10ft? tall. A single trunk Fishtail Palm for $12.00! I already have a clustering Fishtail..not hard to find around here, but thought it was a real find to spot this. Story is they have customers that have palms that out grow their homes so simply drop off at the nursery to have and sell.

Pic of Fishtail which at first thought was the single trunking kind, but when I pulled it out away from the wall I noticed a sucker at the bottom, so now not sure what species of Fishtail this is.

Also grabbed the $10 Kentia palm while getting the Fishtail.

Finally, stopped at Lowes to try once again.....a Spindle Palm(a tripple) Going to keep this one inside all the time. I've managed to kill two so far but I don't think they like to go from inside to outside in the summer, then back inside again.

Sorry about the sideways pics. I straightened them out before the download to the post.

Tim, I do get some as semi annuals. If you keep close tabs on your local Lowe's store they will clear out last years stock when new stuff arrives. I typically get nice 4-5ft tall Cat palms for $2 each. Happen to be there at right time and bought 4.
