So far it's doing quite well! It has put out almost 3 new fronds since I got it over 2.5 months ago. (There are 2 plants in the pot) I watch carefully for any signs of an infestation and I water the plant with a little bit of hydrogen peroxide frequently as well. Occasionally, I'll squirt some hydrogen peroxide into the crown too in case anything is rotting down there. When it's above 50 degrees or so outside, I put it out on the lawn for some fresh air.

In Seattle's nice zone, it could probably enjoy a covered and sheltered porch for quite a while.

Ya, know I have two Majesty Palms here. One is smaller and have had for a couple of years. Seems to get more "fuller" than grow tall. Sits outside in the summer and now in the green house for the winter and it's shown the most growth in the greenhouse.

Other is a much larger double that I bought last winter for $2 at Lowes on clearance. One whole plant was separated and had fallen over in the grow pot. Transplanted into bigger pot with stake holding up the broken side and let it sit outside in the summer. I watered them ALOT, gave them more fertilizer than the other palms and it seemed the more water I gave it the faster they grew. Big Majesty is in mater bathroom sitting in jacuzzi tub so it gets a lot of humidity in there and I still give it a lot of water and it's growing like crazy. I don't think they are hard to keep alive they just take a lot more care than others. I keep a 5 gallon bucket of water in the tub for added humidity, and the water seems to be a magnet for fungus gnats!

I hope they sink like a stone...the buggers.

Never noticed that when I had buckets of water near the woodstove in basement.
Right beside my germinating area.
The buggers ended up all over the house...flying up our noses when we were eating dinner.

That Majesty looks good Scott.
Good work.

Very nice, Scott! Majesty palms are one of my favorite palms when taken care of. That's good that you're keeping your double in a humid environment. I can't do that at the moment, but the humidity usually hovers around 50% at this time of year in the room I keep my 2 palms in. Temperatures get up to the upper 60s/lower 70s during the day, and mid 50s at night (This is in a mostly unheated room).

As for fungus gnats, the war seems to never end! I've been using fly paper lately and it's really cut back on the number of gnats I'm seeing. Still, I can't completely eradicate them since many of my house plants just love moist soil.

Scott - You were trying the chinese fan palm outside right?

I left mine outside until early november. Saw a few weeks below 0C, and at least 4 nights at -7C or below. It was in a large pot, in the middle of my yard, unprotected.

90% of the foliage is gone, but the leaf spear was green, and so were the leaf "stems", so I didnt give up. 2 weeks ago, it started regrowing.

I think that might give you some home for yours!!

Yes, Canadianplant have some Chinese fan palms and a couple of "Cat" palms in the ground. All but one(one cat palm) close to foundation of house and covered with three bags of mulch(bag and all) stacked on them. We'll see in the spring how they did. The one Cat palm that isn't next to foundation is next to a shed, and I poured a bunch of cedar mulch over the crown and then have a semi transparent plastic barrel covering it. No sun hits that barrel so doesn't go through temperature spikes like all the others experience.

I'll post pics this spring good or bad....on how all of them fared. None of them were over $12 to buy so not an expensive experiment.

Local Lowe's store last week told me that their "new" palms and plants shipments were coming in this week. Since they always get the same stuff I was more interested in what they were gong to mark down so stopped by there tonight and had nice supply of 5-6ft tall "cat" palms for $2 each! so bought two of the three they had...along with a Pony Tail Palm to replace the one I had that I over watered and killed. 🙁

I'll keep the cat palms in the garage with other palms I have out there and plant them in the ground in the spring and use them as an annual.

So check you local Lowe's store for these bargains!

Marked down to TWO BUCKS?
Incredible!

We never see deep discounts like that.
And no Lowe's yet in Western Canada...so waiting.

Bet W isn't speaking to you anymore... 😆

All Lowes have a area all year around that they sell plants and palms at steep discount because they feel something is wrong with it, or just just moving out old stock as new arrives. This is the time of year they start discounting palms specifically. Home Depot doesn't do the same, they just throw them away when I asked.

Wife loves a bargain doesn't want anymore palms in the house since were cramped for space now overwintering so many inside. These two will go out in the garage in a couple of days and over winter the balance of winter there.

Heck, I have two palms I ordered from Phil at Jungle Music(Blue Hesper and Blue Pindo palm) that I'm having him hold onto until we get some warmer weather in March to ship them to me. That way I can buy online when he has specials between now and then and have them all shipped at the same time.

Since I discovered there are Blue palms, I've bought a Blue European fan palm and a Bismarcka from Phil as well and they are over wintering in my greenhouse.

My wife cringes when she see's me reading his daily blog...and his specials!

My daughter who is in the Navy is getting orders to San Diego this summer, so Jungle Music will be one of my first stops to visit when I go there to see her. lol I know I'll find something there to buy and ship back....

Adding pic of better of the two Cat palms. Not bad for 2 bucks!

Barb, I think when I land in San Diego I'll stop by and see Phil before I go visit my daughter!

Lowe's had another Cat palm, just not as nice for the same price. I think I will go rescue it tomorrow......
