update pictures of my palms brought indoors for winter 2011-2012. First up is my foxtail and a bamboo palm (to the left) in an east facing room. not much light so I've rigged up a bamboo pole tied to the trunk of the palm with 2 spot lights that shine down on the palm with 100W fluorescent bulbs in each lamp. It works.
pic of lamps
pic of my washington robusta, mexican fan palm. The palms to the right are a small royal palm and a larger spindle. The wash. robusta is the first palm tree I ever bought. I think it was 2005. Coke can next to the trunk to show its size. Its in a west facing window. This is the easiest palm I have ever grown indoors. Fronds never brown, no bugs ever, very easy to care for.

and hot in summer (usually)

Great new pics, easy to see now how you did it. Hopefully I can get my Foxtail to get it's act together and live to get as nice as yours.

Kent,
Wow, the Foxtail's grown a lot since a similar pic last year.
Your palms look soooooo healthy, good work.
Great W.robusta!
And wait until that Spindle pushes the Washy out of the way...it will!
How old is that Selloum philo? nice caudex size so it's not as young as it appears.

Nice palms.
I brought all mine in yesterday. Hoped to get my son to help but he whined about their weight so I ended up doing almost all the work. Ouch.
I haven't set up specific artificial lights for any. Are there particular palms that benefit more from that?
What I've done so far....
"Plant room" radiant heater set to 72deg, bucket of water. 5 Banana's, 1 Coconut palm and one spindle palm(out of view) Although this window faces the East I changed out the 3 ceiling incandescent soft white bulbs and installed 3 60w equivalent CFL's "Daylight" spectrum lights, and 1 other in a small table lamp.
Garage, hung two tarps up to block off a area for potted larger windmills, European fan palm and one Chinese fan palm . Have one more yet to bring in. Have 100W "Daylight" CFL bulb in taller tight fixture that is hooked to a timer and will be on 12hrs a day. Garage itself has 12 Daylight CFL flood lights as well. Garage is well insulated and 3rd car garage door has windows that face the west. It never gets below freezing in there.

Scott,
Hope others will chime in but I think an east window is too dark for the Coconut, with overhead lights too far away, but temps are good.
Chinese Fan likes it a bit warmer than windmills and euro fan palms.
I always warm my car outside garage to minimize yucky fumes.
Bet it feels good to be ready.
Erik, 2 months since your back surgery????? 😕
I drag my heavier pots into position atop a 4' x 2' throw rug, works great on wood floors.
Or those wooden plant trivets with casters.
Understory habitat palms can handle less light.
Like your fav CHAMAEDOREAS, as in Phil Bergman's last emailed newsletter on Shade Palms.

The Coconut palm will perish or survive by staying in that room till I can get it outside. Good thing they are cheap to buy on Ebay.
All I have is West/East facing windows (one small southern one) but entire rest of the house is much cooler temps as house thermostat is on a program.
I've read that temps for that plant are more important that light. The daylight spectrum lights are very intense in a small space like the bedroom, not so much in my garage.

We already talked you into upping the heat.
Equal importance IMO.

Drop one in a toilet, it'll sprout.
BTW...a SPARE toilet (don't flush!) :idea1:

Ha, your pot for your fan palm looks like the one I bought this weekend for the fan palm I'm getting delivered this week! Nice!
