Spears pushing...Ignorance is bliss for these guys:

Bottle Palm...look at the frost between the two front doors! 😆

Spindle palm:

<a href=" http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6725837217/" title="DSC05294 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src=" " width="480" height="640" alt="DSC05294"></a>

Foxtail palm:

<a href=" http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6725837125/" title="DSC05293 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src=" " width="480" height="640" alt="DSC05293"></a>

This PDP doesn't look great, but still pushing:

<a href=" http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/6725837239/" title="DSC05297 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src=" " width="640" height="480" alt="DSC05297"></a>

What's that song? Baby, it's cold outside... :lickice:

Without this palm hobby, I'd have cabin fever by now.

Oh, and the outside protection is good. Trachy hut is reading -0.7C (31F); the Washy/yucca protection is reading "--" (crap!)

Hi Barb,

sounds cold........please keep it on the west coast. Any damage on any plant yet?? Please update up on your rostratas when you inspect them next. We dropped to 5F (-15C) the other night and one of my Eucalyptus's is fried........the other 2 seem fine and all three are within 3 feet of each other. Funny how Eucalyptus shows variation in hardiness more so than other plants.

keep it on the west coast

I want to send it back to Alaska 😉

Any damage on any plant yet

Since the remote for the two outdoor Washy filiferas and three Y.rostratas keeps puking out, I haven't a clue what this cold weather has done.
And the Washies haven't seen the light of day for 3+ months as I can't open them up without destroying their protection.
Gonna have to adjust that for next winter, assuming they're still on this side of life.

one of my Eucalyptus's is fried.

That should come back, shouldn't it? From new buds?
Re "3 feet from each other" comment, years ago I had HALF of a palm die (vertically, left side dead, right was fine). Weird indeed.
It never did look good again, and several yrs later gave up the ghost entirely.

Glad your winter's not so harsh...those gorgeous plants out in your yard 😛

Weird about your 1/2 dead palm.....kinda cool too.

I messed with lots of Eucalyptus back in 2000 and 2001. Not hardy here. The hardiest forms may survive one mild winter. They don't even come back from the roots.....not sure why. I'll post some photos soon of the dead vs. alive Eucs.

Barb
Did you grow your bottle and spindle palms from seed? If so, how long did it take them to get that big?

gpenny, no, these were all bought as big palms.
I've had the spindle the longest of the three...probably 5 or 6 years.

Scott, knew you'd say that! 😀

Thanks John,

Bottle and Foxtail were up-potted Aug/Sept.
You'll notice the older Bottle fronds are still showing signs of that toxic fertilizer applic'n last year...can't wait til it's time to cut those off.

Spindle has been in that tall blue pot for abt 4 years.

Visitors know not to ring the front doorbell. 🙄

Barb

EDIT: here's the blue pot.

Those palms are benefitting from the transplant big time. It looks like the Spindle would be next? Looking at your Bottle palm makes me really miss mine "RIP".

Yeah, John, sorry your Bottle croaked. RIP twin.

The Spindle CAN'T be next...I like its pot and can't find a larger one like that. 😆

Speaking of pots...see that ugly green plastic thing with the ripped cord that the Foxtail is planted in?
You'll laugh...but H was driving down the highway last year.
He screeched to a halt pulling over when he saw "a big plant pot" laying in the ditch.

When he got home and said "look at what I found for you" (he was holding it between two fingers 'coz it was so dirty and smelly), I didn't have the heart to say, "no thanks"....
So gave it a good wash, and ta da, here it is in the front hall.

One man's garbage is another man's ... well, garbage. 😆

PS--sensing my distaste for the ditch pot, he went out and BOUGHT the brown one that houses the Bottle Palm.

Yes, even one of our dogs Dixie doesn't want to be outside in January and would rather be around the tropical plants and the warm blanket.
