Since mid-Nov purchase, seems to have settled in.
I transplanted it right away into soil with added potassium and a bit of epsom salts.

I like the recurving look of these feather palms.

You will that two things with Butia.

They transplant GREAT!
They continue to grow great thru Winter.

Easily one of my favorite Palms to over Winter because they continue to grow no matter what. One word of advice, I had one that was stalled a bit over Summer, I transplanted to a bigger pot and it grew almost 3" of trunk in about 4 months so keep upsizing the tree and remember it transplants great so you wont hurt it.

Thanks everyone! 😀

Wes, nice to find a palm that can be up-potted before it's necessary.
Hard to believe that they grow summer and winter.
When do they rest? Maybe your "stalled" reference? 🙂

Mike, I'll look forward to that challenge with this beautiful palm.
BTW how's the Chicago winter been so far?
How's that gorgeous spanish bayonet/yucca?
Hopefully kind to your outside plants.

I'm sure I'll screw that up somehow. 😆

Have we seen your Butia, Kent?

I like show and tell. I will take a current pic in the next day or two and post. I am not sure if I have noticed any growth during winters spent indoors, but it does seem to do just fine inside in west facing window.

Kent, presume your west facing window is at house temps? or is it in a cold/unused room?

I'm getting confused at the variety of soil information re growing palms.

With a newly acquired palm, I always try to find out what pH a new palm prefers.
Not that I could match it exactly but it would be nice to know whether it likes an acidic--or alkaline--soil/habitat.

On three internet sites' cultural info, Butia capitata was Acidic, to Alkaline 🙄

For acidic loving plants, I always mix shredded oak leaves or pine needles/bark into soil.
For alkaline loving plants, I sprinkle dolomite lime through the soil.

Anybody know what Butia capitata prefers?

Barb, the west facing window is in the family room, inside a heated house. Temps in the mid 60's inside (18C)

I am not sure about soil requirements for the butia. I could not even tell you if mine was acidic or alkaline. Now that I don't know that I'll just obsess on that.

THANKS.

Barb..Nice looking palm..I'm sure they'll love the epsom's..and the sunlite...All of mine have continued to push out (slowly), new fronds..even though their garaged at around +3C to +10C...with sunlite...The wind can be a bummer on those tender fronds (when their young), so if you put them o/side in the spring, find a sheltered spot..Also, they love direct sun and will grow rather fast with the tree eventually widening out...

here is a picture of my butia capitata. It is of fairly good size. I have the fronds tied up to save space in front of its window. It really spreads out if left untied.

Oooh, Kent that's a beauty, looks several years older than mine.
I love the shape of those recurving fronds (even tied up like yours).

palmettoman, will do.
In fact all my palms go into sheltered patio spots in the spring, even the ones reported to like full sun.
I learned that the hard way with my 3 Triangle palms.
Even two hours of morning sun burned existing older fronds very badly, probably because they hadn't had sun all winter.
Those burned areas naturally didn't recover during summer, but new fronds were fine.

Do you have any thoughts on Butia capitata's pH needs...acid or alkaline?
One website stated they grow a little more slowly in really alkaline soil, so I'll use that as a hint to keep pH lower than, say, 6.5, and never use dolomite lime in the soil mix.
