Dear members,
Here in south-east of France our winter are constantly wet. It is the major limiting factor (frost may be in second for many sp.). So I build this small portion of rock garden to keep some cactus in dry condition. So far it seems to be right. Other unprotected Echinocactus grusonii has been killed by previous cold and wet winters.

😯 😯 Thats pretty bad ass..... You have the characteristic med. climate there right? Hot dry summers and mild wet winters?

Agree. These cacti and a perfect way of their protection are fabulous!

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Wow, JM, that is spectacular! 😯
Wish I could roof my entire yard like that.

How long have those cactus been in the ground?

This bed is a new one, created in spring 2012, and plants has crossed there first winter. But I have another bed similar that protect Ferocactus stainesii and they are in the ground for two years now.

I lost several Ferocactus uncovered so I think the protection are important here.

Thank you for your compliments.

In fact my garden is public. It is a zoological garden (www.zootropical.com) so presentation is important.

Yes protection from rain. About cold I think it's marginal. Perhaps avoid ice to form on the plants.

Yes that's pure med. climate. With a lot of rain since October 2012 till now. So it is difficult to grown succulents like globular cacti.
