I know the snow must be annoying, but I bet it has kept your soil from getting overly cold. We are in a drought here so very little snow--not enough to help.

Hi Everyone,

snow is keeping the ground warmer so I like it this time of year.

I usually do take snow off the roof of the greenhouse but since we are getting a cold spell I didn't remove it......more insulation! I'll remove it tomorrow. The Wollemi is seeing a good test. I've hit 12F 2x in the grenhouse so far this winter......but temps typically bounce up to 40F+ during the day which should be beneficial. The Wollemi should be a solid zone 8a/b plant....hopefully....there are a few in Wash DC that have been outside for several years now. Sabal birmingham should be fine......only concern is it's seeing its first winter here so roots aren't established.

I haven't seen Wollemis survive any true zone 7 temps yet (0-5F). What's the coldest you've heard them survive? I had a smaller one in 2008 and it died from our cold.....low of -2F or so. I'm hoping they get hardier with size.

The coldest spot I've heard them survive is Wash DC (Smithsonian)....but that's really a zone 8a climate.

I dont remember the actual temps... But i specificaly remember it being labeled zone 7. Then again... plants are notoriously mis zoned.......

...and then it's durationof cold that makes a difference, you obviously don't get a month of it at a time.

It's encouraging to hear of those Wollemis that have survived outdoors unprotected.

Will be wonderful to see all the protection pulled off late winter.

I always feel better come Feb 1 even though there are a few more weeks of cold. Super cold is usually over Mid March in our area.

that is march here or end of feb on a good year. The temps take the big jump towards spring. We have a good 2 feet of snow in town ( apperantly o ver 6 feet in some areas just out of town), which is great for the run off we miss last year ( litarealy 0 snow in town). Should be a good year to plant some trees 😈

Tim, I give you credit for keeping those palms alive. It sure looks cold there and the temps you are talking about, I am surprised they survive.
