Wife sent me to the market for a bag of cereal, I came back with this 😆
Just starting to push out,
After about a week, it seems to be starting to form a "button" (Cocos are adjacent germinators)
Not sure if this one will grow or just rot away 😆
Will post the results.

rock on Steve. I have tried this at least 4 times with 0 success. I am not sure what the secret is, but if there is someone in north america who could do it, you are the man. I thought about trying another one in a conatiner in ground during the hottest time of summer. seems to me that right now might be as good a time as any to put on outside and try. best of luck and keep us posted.

Last time I was at wal-mart they had them in 5 gal pots for $11 each. Too much hassle germinating them when you can get them already going for that cheap. Good luck with it.
Thanks! I'll post the results, I figure it has about a 50/50 chance.
Would be happy to find one at Wal-Mart, (Not too many end up here in the middle of KS 😆

I thought the coconuts with the husk removed couldn't be germinated.

I always thought that too ❓ Maybe the husk serves to protect the earliest stages of growth, (without a husk, these things are a magnet for insects when starting out)

This one was short lived, it cracked itself open today!
Had it in a shady part of the GH, but it did warm up today, (107*F), may have just been too much for it 😆

Maybe try germinating it in the shade?
Seems there were lots lying under trees in ditches in Hawaii.
You'll recall the one I brought back (with the phyto) didn't make it.
Go get some more cereal 😆

Barb,
Next one will get bagged up and put in a dark corner, just think it would be cool to see one of these grocery store ones grow 😀

as mentioned before I have had no success trying this. All of mine have cracked open also and they smell when they begin to rot. I tried two in ground last summer and both carcked open. I have a yellow lab and he dug it up it stank so bad (although he seemed to love the smell). Good luck.

Still worth a shot to try it again.
Hey Steve, your new avatar...was that an invasion or just one or two hopping around?

what is it about pets and stinky "digs"? 😆 😆
My dog will take a perfectly good, fresh from the box biscuit, bury it, leave it for four days, dig it up and proudly parade the stinky, slimy, dirty, crawlin' thing and drop it on someone's lap. 😡

Barb,
With the warm weather & rain, they are everywhere this year. I could probably go outside and collect a few hundred, want me to send you some? 😆
