I passed on that deal, might find room for a few more seedlings tho 😆

The needle out front ( South Side) bit it a while ago. Think it had more to do with the wind than the cold. I have a couple more in sheltered spots that have finally started growing. One in the GH is in a cold dark spot that constantly gets dripped on every day and it looks the best!

Let me know how those Sabal seeds work out.

Kansas,
I received the Needle seedlings last March from FL, They were 2 strap leaf size and were grown in plug trays which seemed to stunt the root system. ~ at least in my opinion, deeper pots = more vigorous growth.

Some went into pots and some directly into the ground ( probably should have went into containers for another year or two but I wanted to experiment) The ones in the ground stalled out and slowly browned all Summer , don't really think they cared for the heat. Once we dropped below freezing this one started growing, working on its second spear now ~ tough Palms 8)

The one in the GH.

All the seedlings I got from you this Summer are doing OK, I stepped up the container size and they stalled due to that and the heat ~ Had a nasty stretch of 100+ F Days, Trachy's are starting to grow again.

That is one of them you sent my way, There all doing good and about the same size.
Curious to see how well these deal with our Summer temps. Have you run across any local nurserys with a good selection of Yuccas & Agaves ?

Just to let you know, I had the brothers & sisters of that Fortunei in the sun with no filter and they did not do too well. Yours looks 10 times better than any of mine.
Yes, that place I want to take and OPPalm to this Spring, "Arnold's Greenhouse" in LeRoy, Kansas has many many many Yucca and Ags. The difference is that they grow them from the beginning in their greenhouse. So they are some what used to the weather and the price is GREAT!!
For instance, I went to a Topeka Nursery and priced a 2 gallon pot of "Yellow Grove Bamboo" and they had it for $120, YES, I said it was $120!!!! I then went to "Arnold's" and they had the same 2 gallon "Yellow Grove Bamboo" for..........$22, Yes, $22!!!! They grew it from scratch in the greenhouse so their is no need for the mark up for buying from somebody like "Monrovia" for them.

Coccothrinax litoralis ~ Slooow for me, almost 2 years old.

Adonidia merrillii ~ Chrismas Palm Seedlings.

Dypsis decaryi ~ Triangle Palm Seedlings, These are fast growers for me, also a nice dark green color.

Thrinax radiata ~ Just starting to break the surface, Think I have about 300 of these spread around the house 😆

Bismarckia nobilis ~ A lonely one looking out an icy window...................

Steve - read your thread about your Rhap Hystrix (needle Palm). I planted a needle and a couple of T Firtuneis early last summer and covered them with shade cloth. I bought the shade cloth at Home Depot , it's 6' wide and I think I bought 10' long, so I had a lot of it. Back to my point - the needles and T fortunei I covered with shade cloth (full sun) looked 100% better than the ones that were left to fend for themselves. I think the intense summer sun/heat is too much for the small palms. I was not experimenting at the time , I just thought it would be wise to shade them for few months until the got established. They looked so good though that I did not take the shade cloth off all summer. They covered oner grew faster and had better color than the ones exposed to the sun. Just food for thought.

You are correct about the sun exposure. Most Palms start out as understory plants and will not thrive in full sun until a certain size.

Shade cloth is on my list 8)

Your outside stuff doing OK? My robustas are doing well, got cold enough in the one box for the Opuntias to flop over, had to tie them back up 😆

Shade cloth = a good thing. I made small shade structures out of 1" X 2" lumber, pounded them into the ground and they worked great.

Steve - my outdoor stuff is looking pretty good. I do have some concerns that my palm hut is getting to warm on sunny days, even with open sides. My Trachy Takil leaves are getting burned out it appears. I sprayed it with some fungecide and maybe this weekend I'll spray with some wilt pruf. I think it will be OK. Only time will tell.
Also this weekend I am going to put some shade cloth on the south facing side of my palm hut.

Steve,
Thrinax radiata: Are those from the seeds you sent me? I only had three of those pop for me and only one of those has a root that I think is going to make it, MAYBE 😥 I changed the medium as the one I had them in was a clumpy mixture and not my new found favorite mixture.

Dypsis decaryi : Are these from that guy in Texas by way of Florida? If so, I got ZERO germination from them. Still have hope thou.

Adonidia merrillii : Are these from the batch that you gave me some last year? If so, I LOVE THOSE!!!! Maybe my favorite things you gave me. Doing AWSOME right now.

Are you able to have a visit this week?

Kansas, ( Wes ),

The Thrinax and Gaussia are all from the same batch, I have Thrinax coming up like weeds here and have had low results with the Gaussia.

These are the kind of the things I"ve given up on trying to sort out. Another example is spending 2 days soaking and cleaning 250+ fresh Queen Palm seeds and only having 4 germinate. Then having 2 damp off 😆

The Triangles are from a bonus pack that Ortanique was kind enough to send a few months back. The ones from Texas got tossed after some signs of rot ~ Think they were just too old. Everything else from there has germinated.

The Christmas Palms are one and the same, Sailing through this Winter with 35* ~ 45*F low temps in the GH 8)

Will send you a PM on the other.

"The Thrinax and Gaussia are all from the same batch, I have Thrinax coming up like weeds here and have had low results with the Gaussia."
WOW!!! That is amazing. Because I have the exact opposite results. I told you about the three Thrinax seeds and how I don't think I will even get one tree out of them. But EVERY SINGLE ONE of my Gaussis popped. They are still throwing down the root and do not have the "seedling" yet, but all are looking good as far as rooting goes.

"The Triangles".." The ones from Texas got tossed after some signs of rot ~ Think they were just too old. "
Yea, I still have them trying, but I think they are too old. You had luck with the "carpenter Palms"????

"The Christmas Palms are one and the same, Sailing through this Winter with 35* ~ 45*F low temps in the GH "
Yep, I just love these. I am SOOOO glad that you told me about them doing so well in the greenhouse. Now I can comfortably have them in mine if the snow ever melts to where I can put mine up.

Steve,
I wished I have met you a lot sooner,I would have sent you my buta paraguayensis and pinanga coronata seeds.
I planted them in May and still no germination!!!
I have them in Plastic cups,on a wire shelf with a oil filled heater underneath on low,so I know there getting plenty of warmth, have to water them about every 3 to 4 days.
Haven't gave up yet, fingers are still crossed but getting stiff,so they better hurry and germinate!!LOL
