Papaya is great as a dried fruit.
If I can grow them inside for 3-4 months, I just may have a chance to fruit them. I am going to have to look for a papaya from the coolest climate.

You don't have to be crazy to grow palms in Alberta..... But it helps
Allen shouldn't be a problem.
Heres the fruit I just picked up. Don't know the varieties...
Seed from a single small fruit.
Just got back from the store I got one large papaya grown in Brazil & two small ones grown in Belize...
I have just seen the larger papayas around here in Kansas City. I guess I may have to check out some smaller specialty stores to see what they might have. Dam (sp?) you people make me work hard growing stuff I shouldn't be growing. I am not sure Kansas City is culturally advanced enough that we have papaya from Belize. My guess is that most mid westerners would have no idea what a papaya is if you showed them one. If I have offended any midwesterners in my papaya rant -I apologize.
Kent in Kansas
where it's cold in winter (always)
and hot in summer (usually)

Haha... The smaller ones are much sweeter than the large one. Only reason I know where they were grown is from the sticker on the fruit... 😆 . I feel for ya. I wasn't going to grow any either, now I have to let a bazillion baby papayas grow to flowering stage so I can sort out the bi-sexuals to grow on to maturity... Like I don't have enough other plants to look after... 😯
See what I mean... Wife walks in & first thing out of her mouth is "where do you think your putting those".... I might as well just put a bed out in the garage... Hell my guitars, plants, etc... I'll just bring the big screen out there & I'll be set (I already have the beer fridge stocked up out there) 😆 😆

I hear ya Todd! I just don't understand it. I will be sitting at the PC looking at palms on ebay, from across the room I hear, "Don't even think about it!" Geezzz, I was just looking!!! :angel4:
PALMS ON eBAY???
Live palms? 😯
Kent, so I guess the Bolshoi Ballet isn't performing in a stopover there?
Same here.
Todd, you can start the new crop for Fort Papaya next door.
I haven't started my Papaya yet...it's just sitting on the counter getting yellow-er.
I bought a mango too and that is one LARGE seed.
Good luck cleaning that sucker.
I scraped with a knife, then used a cheese grater, then a vegetable grater.
Couldn't find the sander.
Two knuckles are now raw.
The mango after-taste (yech!) made me look at the papaya and wonder what THAT tastes like.
I probably have uncultured food taste.
Doubt it'd go with my favorite beverage 🙂

If you drink, don't drive. Don't even putt.
Craig, husband says the same thing...
walks through the house's palm areas, mimicking chimp noises, adding "me Tarzan".
I'm searching for a rope for him. 😆

Laaz ... I saw the same two types of papaya in a local grocery store. The small ones where selling for $3.88 each! and the large ones at .89 cents / lb.
I passed on both 😥
Barb ... the rope thing isn't so nice on Valentines day. Wait til tomorrow 😆
Cheers, Barrie.
Oh ya, valentine's day (yawn).
Anybody ever started Starfruit? Taste like an apple.
I've got 4 seeds soaking.

Barrie, yes they were expensive. The small ones were 2 for $5 and the large were .79 a lb.
Once she knew what a papaya was, my wife said "go for it, there is still a little room in front of the TV." I got her 2 Hibiscus for Valentines day and they have taken the last of the room in front of the windows. There is also room for 1 more plant on the coffee table as long as the coffee cups, beer cans etc. get put on the floor. The last of the room on the dining room window sill went to the 2 agaves that I found at Rona.

FWIW~ The Papaya seedlings in the house, ( under the CFL bulb), are growing twice as fast as the ones in the GH.
Barb, How has the Starfruit worked out?

Look at that papaya growth...
at first glance, resembled abutilon leaves.
How far out the bottom are the roots growing? 😆 😆
Nothing up yet on my starfruit.
I barely covered the seed, and misted, inverted jar on top to retain humidity, near woodstove.
Wonder if they need light.
probably just patience. 😉
