Steve, would you advise me re potting up the one you gave me? It is putting out a new leaf right now. But is this a bad time to repot?
Wes, I would wait, every time I re-pot something near the end of the year it just sulks until Spring anyways.
Barb, A bit out of my league too, but might be worth it for the years it takes to get one to that size.
( I know people who spend more than that on bedding plants each year, that one is about $530.00 more than I've ever spent on one plant 🙂

Folks that spend THAT much on annual plants probably aren't having as much fun as we are. 😕

Mad as hell.
Bought what I thought was a nice Bottle Palm today.
Got home, looked at images on google.
Discovered it's a PONYTAIL PALM...not a palm at all, but a LILY.
Damn labels that say "Tropical foliage".
Note to nurseries: Either state the name of the bloody thing, or forget a label period.
I could spit nails 👿
I may drown the beggar.
Barb.

Those tags are worthless...besides maybe spray painting over them and reusing 🙂
This year I bought a Alocasia cucullata that was labelled as a "Buddha Palm"
Most of the Majesty Palms are now labelled as " Low Light Plants". The list of errors goes on and on, I would be happy to just get a tag with the correct Genus.
How big is your Beaucarnea recurvata ? I have a couple smaller ones, the larger, well grown ones are impressive 8)

In two nurseries I visited, Majesty Palms were the only ones labelled as Majesty. Everything else says Tropical Foliage, even the Fishtails!
Have read that ponytails grow really slowly/ This one has 4 small branches...a couple of feet of trunk before it branched out would've been preferable.
Wow...Alocasia labelled as Buddha...that's as bizarre as labelling could be. Maybe a mischievous child was switching them while parents were shopping.
Homemade plant ID tags: One window has a broken mini-blind. I'll cut the plastic slats into new plant labels! More than I need. Hope there's no lead in 'em.
While at the nursery, I simply had to snap a pic of these palms (signage 14-inch Tropical Palms). It was like being in a wonderful forest! Doubt I could've kept one alive so didn't buy one.

This was actually one of the better tags I've seen, (a correct binomial), but no clue as to where the common name came from.
My ponytail seems similar, wonder if they came from the same nursery?
The one on the right was a .99 cent grocery store deal.

Steve, that is weird. I googled both names, and the Alocasia looks to be correct, yet Buddha Palm images resemble a Bamboo-like plant.
OK you've convinced me not to drown my ponytail. They are a nice looking plant. You paid 99 CENTS for the one at right ???? 😯
Nice shape on "bulb". Mine was $27.88 plus tax.
Have read that ponytails like to be near 50 F over winter, and very dry, so mine's going into the barely-heated building.

A nursery very close to my home has a bottle palm about 5ft tall listed at $269.99 however it now marked down 70% off. Not knowing much about these palms I think it's a good price but I'm unsure how it will do in the house. Any feedback would be appreciated.
I have had very good luck in a west window with my bottle palm for the last 2 years. It appears to like being inside. It actually threw 2 new fronds over the winter. I say "buy it".
Kent in Kansas
where it's cold in winter (always)
and hot in summer (usually)

Mine's just a baby, and it was in the bargain bin missing much of its soil.
Seems to like the TLC it's getting indoors.
70% off is a great price!
