Look like Sagos to me. The ones from the box stores really seem to take off when given some decent care.

I am going to have to learn how to care for them. I never expected to find a cycad in Edmonton so I bought 4 of them, leaving only the damaged ones. I also added another Yucca elephantipes.

Nice find on those! All of the Sagos I've grown like to put down deep roots from an early age. You may want to move those up to a one or tall 2 gallon container. ( not sure of the metric equivalents )

Thanks for the web site. I am bilingual metric/SAE as I was finished my education before Canada got Metric-ified.
I've got a couple of old wooden nail kegs that are about 30" high and about 5 gal. Would that be too big of a pot for them?

Might be a little on the large size but would work with a good potting mix. With my Cycads a quick draining mix with lots of larger particles ( providing air space)
The peat based mixes seem to stay too wet and sand does not provide enough air space - they are OK in the Summer but can cause rot in the Winter.
For an off the shelf mix I have been using the Sta-Green container mix, ( Lowes), with about 20 - 30% Perlite added.

KNNN, I used "Cactus Soil" on my new ones, and added vermiculate to it along with some African Violet "soil" ( don't know why they call it soil when it looks like rocks to me). Should that be ok??
As long as it drains quick and has some air space it should be fine..............
