Excellent article...how devastating, especially as the threat expands to all Cycads.
Thanks for that, Steve.

If you drink, don't drive. Don't even putt.
Just to let you know, the Taitungensis X Guizhouensis Hybrid that Robert Chumley has made, seems resistant to Asian Scale.
Steve, I think you have one of these??? I have about 5 and all are doing great.
Barb ~ You're welcome! Some of the box stores bring their stock in from areas where this is a problem. I haven't seen it here locally but as often as they move their stuff around it pays to be on the lookout.
Wes , (Kansas) ~ I've seen that mentioned on the Cycad newsgroup and hope it turns out to be resistant! Let me know how hardy these turn out to be. I don't have any yet ~ I've been saving up and just ordered a couple Bowenia that will hopefully be here next week 8)

Shoot Steve, I thought you did have one. I know Robert is looking to get some out there and I know he is letting them go cheap as long as you give feedback to him and other boards (yea, I'm a PIMP DADDY YO!!) 😆
I THINK he told me $25 for a baseball size caudex??? I think thats what he told me.
But yes, these, so far have been scale free.
BTW, I am getting a new flush on one of the Coonties you gave me.
OOOHHHH, I forgot to ask you!! I know you have a Cardboard palm, Mine put out a cone last year, if it does it again, and yours does too, can I talk you into taking my Cardboard for a month or two and you pollinating them???? I have no clue what I am doing and your VERY VERY good at that stuff.
The one I got from WalWart should be close to coning size, unfortunately they hacked most of the roots off to get it into the "Bonsai" planter. It's doing fine now, but will probably spend the rest of this year just growing new roots 😐
If you get a cone on yours let me know, if it is a male you can save and store the pollen. If you have a female there should be plenty of pollen available thru some of the pollen banks, etc.
This is a good article on Hand-pollination of Cycads --> http://www.plantapalm.com/vce/horticulture/pollination.htm
I have some Zamias that are at coning size so I am hoping that maybe this season...................
( One of my goals has been to get a small breeding colony going 8)

I have no idea how to tell if it is male or female but I think I remember the cone last year looked amlomost like an "ear of corn". Don't know if that helps.
On an earlier post, I think it was Barrie and Steve who said:
if it shakes out pollen (like yellow dust) easily, and it's yellow, it's a male.
if it's more greenish than yellow, it's a female.
Hope I've quoted the experts correctly.

Barrie was referring to Trachycarpus.
Males are more yellow and females are a greenish yellow. Males flower first and develop small yellow flowers that shake off easily.
