I'm wondering if there's anything my Trachycarpus Fortunei is lacking when I've seen a couple of its fronds with a yellow rainbow-like shape right across the centre. Anyone see this before? I don't have a pic right now unfortunately. I fertilize with Miracle Gro 26-8-16, plus I add epsom salts (this fertilizer has micronutrients but no Magnesium!)

Heidi,
I had a very light version on my oldest trachy, I thought mine was kinda cool looking. But I'm sure if mine was yellow it wouldn't have been cool at all. My though which is just a guess, it could be where the spear was located in the crown during the coldest point of the winter. Just a guess but if yours was out last winter and you can count the fronds that are new maybe that is what it is. I hope you have been having a nice summer with the Hot temps. in your area. I'm sure your basjoo is lovin it. Hope to see some pictures when you get a chance.
Bill
Hey thanks for your thought Bill! Actually these Trachys are new this year, so they have seen nothing but the hot hot weather so far and really seem to be loving it! I've babied these two 5 ft palms I planted in April, so when I see a yellow stripe through the middle I begin to wonder what I'm doing wrong. I'll try to find some pictures, my main computer is down for a week. 🙁 Thanks for the well wishes, hope your summer's been good to you and your tropicals too!

As Bill mentioned this ring is most commonly know as a frost ring caused by the spear being damaged by water/frost sitting in the crown area. There are other things that can cause it,if it is yellow it may just be that the spear did not move for a while from just below the exposed part, since it was not in sun yet but still out of the palms cell factory it may have discolored from lack of light while growth stalled, possibily from repotting or whatever.
Ususally not a problem as palms grow out of this with the next leaf or the one after.

Thanks hardyjim - I see it only on the 2nd and 3rd newest fronds. I'll keep watching it, but they look great otherwise.

Hi Heidi,
I couldn't open your second pic...great yard, nicely done! Love your "sun".
Got something similar in Mexico, sure looks good outdoors!
BTW, epsom salts are, I believe, high in magnesium. But contains no manganese.
Cheers.

Hi Barb good to hear from you!
Thanks for the comments on the yard! Too bad the second pic doesn't open, I'll try it again.
My ferilizer has the Manganese and the others, just not the Magnesium...not sure why that is. I never know how much of the salts to give so not sure if each tree is getting enough.
I was in your neck of the woods Aug. long weekend when it was HOT HOT HOT! Your Trachy in your Avatar looks very nice, it must be liking its new home! hope you're having a great summer!

Heidi,
Ooops, thought you were just using epsom salts, which is magnesium.
I usually add a tablespoon of epsom salts in a two gallon watering can, stirring to help the crystals dissolve.
Hotter than the hubs of hell here most of July and August, hope you had a good vacation nevertheless.
Thanks for the new pics of your yard...looks like a great place to kick back and relax.

Thanks Barb,
I'm using Miracle Grow 26-8-16 (the water soluble with micronutrients)...again, weird it doesn't include Magnesium. I think I'll try and find a good palm fertilizer at the local nursery like palm spikes next year. I always have a hard time figuring out how much fertilizer per palm. Thanks for the epsom salts info - do you share that one tablespoon between how many plants?

Heidi, epsom salts are a nice tonic, and for the palms in large containers, that amount will do 2 palms for a quick green-up.
I've had trouble finding palm fertilizers.
Seems the nurseries I frequent are either sold out or they never stock it.
I've read so much recently about blackstrap molasses being an excellent fertilizer/or addition to fertilizer, I may just start using it.
It's touted as being a great food for soil organisms, which in turn is beneficial to plants.
But I doubt there are organisms in container soil.
Also worried whether it would attract ants.

Barb - I've heard about the molasses somewhere too. interesting indeed, but I agree it could attract some unwanted pests. good to try tho!
I've looked everywhere for palm fertilizer as well. I wonder if I could order some from the nursery or online (via canadian site).
Yikes! I think I've used a couple of Tbsp. epsom salts PER TREE!

Heidi, no problem with 2 tbsp.
I've even sprinkled a handful on the ground around some yellowish trees like spruce, etc. when rain was expected.

WOW great tips Barb thanks! I didn't think an extra Tbsp would hurt the palm but it never hurts to make sure! 🙂 I can't believe how much I've learned in the past year!
