All my other palms are semi protected on the South side of my garage so easy to protect. This larger Windmill is more exposed to wind and away from the house further. This should work though.
Wire cage, foam on a roll, heavy duty shrink wrap around the entire cage, C7 Christmas lights laying at bottom along with heat tape buried around root ball. Left top open, but can cover quickly using large heavy mil plastic bags we use at work when we ship transmissions. I can add/remove the bags depending on temps. Have wireless thermometer in crown of Palm to monitor temps as well.
Styrofoam lid can be used last minute as well if it gets really cold, and I'll just put pavers on top of it to hold it in place.

That'd make it in Alaska, Scott!
Good job.

Thanks Barb. If we have a mild winter like we did last year I have to be able to not let cage get too hot and bake the poor palms. I bought a 5 ft long, 4 inch around PVC tube that I can use to water the palms over the winter as well. I just pour a pitcher of water down the tube right to the base of the palm(s) it worked good last year, although I had a much smaller PVC tube that I used.

Yeah, I remember you doing that and thinking it was a great idea.
Your ground must be like Erik's in Oklahoma where it doesn't ever really freeze hard, if at all.
We freeze right down to China with 5 months of winter.
Most years anyway.

Pics taken 12/9/12
Bags of mulch cover the two Chinese fan palms and one "Cat" palm. Hopefully they will come back in the spring!
Some overwinter in garage with 2 200w daylight spectrum CFL bulbs for light on a timer set for 14 hrs a day. Also small heater on thermocube if it gets real cold, but garage temp never drops below freezing anyway. Just a safe guard in place.
Well.......I tried to add pics like I normally do, but process has changed for some reason and although pics show they downloaded to post they didn't.
Anyone else having issue with posting pics?

Scott, do you use Flickr?
Flickr's photo URL process changed some time ago and screwed things up big time.
I now cut'n'paste the ENTIRE url ... which works here ALONE.
Don't use the URL buttons above Palms North posts at all.
If you use something other than Flickr, I can't help.
Sounds like your protection is ready for winter...good work.

EDIT: RE Flickr, found this on their site that explains it:
Where is the HTML code and photo file link?
The HTML code to embed a photo in a web page that you used to find on the All Sizes page is now only in the Share menu above the photo, to the right of the Actions menu. We now also include BBCode! (standard message board code)
There are a few cases where the code may not be available: 1) If the photo is restricted. 2) If that person has turned off "Share this" or access to original files.
The direct link to a photo file is no longer shown on the page. Per the Flickr Community Guidelines "pages on other websites that display content hosted on flickr.com must provide a link from each photo or video back to its page on Flickr." Linking directly to the photo file doesn't do this.

Yea, just tried again. Couldn't get them to load. No, I don't use Flickr at all.

Whoa, I didn;t know we could do that! I guess it is safe to do so as long as the roots don't freeze right?

For online picture/album storage I just use my facebook account.
Guess I can just add Palm/album link in posts when necc, although it was nice to just post specific pics to a thread.

No, there is a facebook link that can be shared for even non facebook users.
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151167493812655.465487.504492654&type=1&l=543dca607d
Under the tools tab (geared wheel looking thing) click on SHARE and a link appears that can be copied and pasted in to email, or forums.
