We had an unusual number of below freezing temps in Oct because of Sandy spinning up the coast- then none in November until 2 nights of 22F and 20F.

I covered the Washy only for that one.

The cold temps were not kind to this Americana-
to much rain beforehand .

I don't think the Graptopetalum even knew it got cold!

I cut a lot of damaged fronds of the palms..drought/heat

Needle palm

never knew Plumosa ferns were so hardy-it has seen the lowest of the 20s...it did have it's new growth melt off...

Little T.Tesan

T.Bulgaria-recovered from horrific spear/core loss

Couple of S.Louisiana

S.Brazoria

C.Cerifera clump-lost it's leader the first year.

This one pulled for the first time last year-tougher than some Trachys...he is back in blue.

Speaking of blue...maybe white.

Princeps color is still a little dull from a hot summer.

Cactus won't see any rain until April.....

Waggie is so beautiful, takes my breath away.

You can remove the word "little" from Tesan 😀

The blue colors are sure showing dominance now...the ceriferas, the Princeps wow with blue desert plants backdrop.

And UP UP AND AWAY goes the Washy ... and onto the stairs 😆
I see you moved the smaller one to the front of house.
How were the roots when you dug it up?
Maybe it just didn't like being so close to its sibling.

Jim, Im impressed by how the Sabals look this year. ITs about time they really took off! Im even more impressed by the size of that massive washy 😯 You think you can protect that beast for much longer?

Also, your bamboo looks ready to upsize and start to overtake those spots!

The Bessetii expanded x 6 over it's size last year and the Nigra put out a lot of growth for its first(drought)year!

It pulled last fall but more importantly recovered with 6 leaves-they may be close to Fortunei in cold
tolerance but probably less tolerant of soil/crown moisture.

I think it saw mid teens(maybe less)in the enclosure.

I think the Waggie and Princeps are my fav's-don't tell the other plants-they are green with envy already...

Not sure which plant your referring to but the other Washy is gone...leaky gutter and being planted to high
conspired against it.

That is why it is next to the house,I can work off the roof which gives me almost 20' 😀

Thats the same answer I give when asked about how to protect my bamboo when it gets bigger: "a bigger pile of leaves" lol.

Cant wait to see your bamboo go next year. They eventually create their ideal soil conditions themselves by dropping leaves, which hold the silica from the soil, recycling it. Same for the palms, especially if you have a warm winter like last.

You had 2 by the stairs.
One grew like crazy, the other didn't (you said), although it looks good in your pic above.
So it died? 🙄

You know...I have another in a pot.

Don't think I need another in the ground though,
easy to see how beastly they become in a short time!

It was planted to high,was to close to a leaky gutter and
didn't have much going on when I dug it up....practically speaking-
just to big to haul inside and would take to long to recover from root damage.

I think it would always be vulnerable to more disease even if it had time to recover.

Thats why ya plant 2 and have at least another in a pot for backup! 8)

Your Palms are looking nice. I haven't had a chance to get outside to protect mine at all. Iv been to busy with work and school, hopefully of thanksgiving break ill get around to it. I got my Agaves covered with plastic and glass. That bissetti bamboo is a fast grower I have a stand I planted 4 years ago and its grown like crazy. I planted Yellow groove at the same time and it hasen't expanded nearly as much.
