After speaking to "tropicman"'s buddy in Wichita, he convinced me to plant the three Sabals I have. I plan on buying another from him BTW.
I planted them on the South side of the house, and up close to the house so not much wind. I did amend the soil to about 1/ medium was growing in the pot. 1/ 2 year old cow manure. 1/ natural existing dirt.
Are there any other things I could do??
By the way, in Wichita Ks, he has some WONDERFUL Sabal Birmingham (UG trunk of coarse but 4' leafs) growing and Yucca Elata (7' trunks). Just amazing!!!
Kansas..you gotta invest in a digital man..?
The only thing I can tell you is a fellow has succ. overwintered them up here..Z6-with no protection....raised bed with cocoa mulch...No damage!
Slow growin I think...
Good luck...

You may want to consider the SE, E, and NE sides of your house depending on its position. When there is cold air coming from the W or SW, it hits the South side of the house.
Mulching for the winter in order to insulate the roots will help a lot. I would also add a slow release fertilizer with micronutrients.
I have access to a digi camara, but I am too stupid to know how to post them and stuff 😳
Palmetto: I do plan on mulching them w/ about a foot of cypress mulch. Now when I do, do I peel back the mulch away from the trunk as not to cause mold??
Turtile: How my house sets and where it sets is kinda weird. There is a big hill in my back yard that has big Duplexes on. The houses are only about 150' from my house. It is a really steep hill back there. So when the wind is out of the West, it doesn't really effect me. Also, my house sets kinda off to the east. So when I say I planted them on the south side of the HOUSE, they are really planted South East to the SUN. So maybe I'll be ok?
All that matters for location is picking the spot that receives the least amount of wind. You most likley have the best spot if its protected from the SW to NW winds. Gowing plants in full sun actually hardens them against cold. But if the roots freeze during the winter, the leaves can get damaged from the sun (drying). If you mulch enough near your house, your ground shouldn't freeze too much.
Try to keep the spear as dry as possible and spray it with a Fungicide/Bactericide.
Kansas, did you come to Wichita,or just talk to Raymone on the phone?
So keep the roots from freezing, got it. I planned on mulching heavily, the also, and tell me if this would work, but they are not big plants, so I was going to take a milk jug, cut the bottom off and place it n top of the minor. Kinda like a milk jug mini greenhouse. Then of coarse leave the lid off for ventilation. WOuld that work?
THe guy I talked to, and I agree with him, thinks that the Minor is hardier than the Hystrix. And let me tell you something, it got DAMN cold in Wichita this year and his Sabal Birminghams look BEAUTIFUL!!!!! You should see them.
I didn't get to go by and talk to him, but I did drive thru and look at his absolutly WONDERFUL landscape at teh Nazarine Church. Those 8' Yucca Elatas are unbelievable. So I called him when I got home and had a great conversation with him.
Great guy, and that guy can flat out landscape 🙂
I have him saving me one of those Minors you got.
Yes,Raymone is very knowledgeable when it comes to hardy plants and knows just what to do to overwinter them as welll.
Good for you, they'll love their new location!
And I think I know what you'll do with those empty plant pots!!!! Fill 'em up! 😆
