This Washingtonia filifera 'Northern Turkey' was given to me by Banana Joe and has endured some poor conditions but keeps on living. The seed originally came from Kiril in Bulgaria (Polar Palms) and is likely our best shot at filifera. I do have one lone survivor of W. filifera 'Las Cruces' that I got from Ian Barcley but is only 2 years old in a gallon pot. The others didn't survive a rodent attack this past winter.
Cheers, Barrie.
The big washingtonia that was on the side of your place was that robusta?

Hmmmmm. Barrie Washingtonia filifera does not usually have that bright red on the trunk. Maybe a hybrid ?
Wes ... yes.
Laaz ... the "red" is cut, dead or dying petiole bases and not the coloring associated with living filifera plant material. Notice the live petiole bases and the green color. Once cut, these die off and turn a reddish hue.
Hey Barrie
I had a few of these from Joe as well, but mine all perished 2 winters ago. Up to that point they sure grew quickly. Yours looks awesome, I wish I could have provided them with a better environment like I have now. I guess if it was easy, it wouldn't be so rewarding when it works.

Barrie nice to see my favorite palm growing on the island. I also have 40 seedlings started from Ian W.filifera "Truth or Consequences New Mexico form".They seem to be slower than the other filifera I have maybe because they are supposed to be cold hardier? Rain protection?
