I'm frankly stunned that the state of Nevada is targeting the removal of these palms.
It's a long document, but worth the reading time: There's also a petition.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

The genus Washingtonia is quite prolific and a nuisance, much the same Sabal palmetto is in the SE. These pop up in sidewalk seams, and almost anywhere they can root down. I doubt Washingtonia will ever be eradicated, if that's their goal.
Cheers, Barrie.
In that desert environment, Barrie, I hope they don't succeed in eradicating them.
They belong there.

Absolutely Barb ... some jackass has decided to crusade against this for no good sustainable reason. If only the energy that was wasted on these endevours could be chanelled into something productive. 😕
Cheers, Barrie.
I drove through that area before and was one of the places I had picked Filifera seeds from. There is no way they can get rid off all those filifera. They are so abundant everywhere, public land and private land. It would be like trying to remove the sand from the desert lol.

I could see the value of the eradication IF a plant was so noxious that it poisoned/destroyed soil so that other plants and crops wouldn't grow. But on a desert...what do the government people want? Just sand? Which would then be subject to erosion and blowaway/dunes from storms.
Or if a "weed species" was sucking up dwindling water supply...but only government/bureaucrats would spend
time and money wanting to get rid of palms in a desert.
Stupidity blows my mind 😥
I have a solution. The Nevada government can have all my KNAPWEED and they can give me their W.filifera. 😀 &imgrefurl= http://www.co.shawnee.ks.us/NW/russianKnap.shtm&h=838&w=650&sz=111&hl=en&start=21&tbnid=NdB7PZ_MfuauxM:&tbnh=144&tbnw=112&prev ="> http://www.co.shawnee.ks.us/images/nwImages/targets/russknap1targ.jp g" target="_blank">

Turns out the link is from Kansas ! (hi, folks! )
The Russian Knapweed has, in the last 30-40 years, taken over almost all Okanagan open rangeland.
Wouldn't palms be wonderful instead!

Good idea Barb. If that doesn't work, we have plenty of Scotch Broom that's invaded the Island we could arrange a trade for. 😆
Cheers, Barrie.
I'll trade them our Scentless Chamomile for Washingtonia filifera any day. I'll even throw in a few billion Dandelions to sweeten the deal. 😉

You don't have to be crazy to grow palms in Alberta..... But it helps
Those are all offers Nevada simply couldn't refuse 😉

PS--that's not to say Canada's bureaucrats are any better...our list is pretty long, too!

I'll take those Washingtonia weeds anyday. 😀
😆 I will trade them for the nuisance maple seedlings we get up here.
