Well, it's Palm Sunday and being busy next weekend, I decided to uncover my palms today. It's not ideal out -- 33F and snowing, but what the heck -- they're trachys!!! Forecast is for 30s early this week, warming to near 50F by next weekend, so all should be OK!

Just before I started.

Insulation and front panel off. Looking good so far!

Here's the other.

My friend, Steve, and daughter, Charla, posing by my biggest trachy. He did a similar pose last fall before I boxed it up! The fronds are just BEGGING to be cut loose!

Here's the other.

Yes!!! Set free finally!

The other one!

Both in the same shot!

Wow! They look super. In fact, better then the ones in Texas right now that were uncovered through a mild winter.

They look really nice. You should see some good growth from them this year.

Good job...the box method works always well for me too. I tried the mummywrap technique this winter. There s what my biggest Trachy looks after uncovered it. It suffered a few burns tips du to the overheat from the heatcable, i just changed the cable last week by another one smaller. We had a bad winter with a lots of night under -25c or -15F. That Trachy has survived 2 winter with new methods i tried and he survived with damage every years 😥 ...but thats the part of the game, we learn with experience 😀 .
There s few pics...

We still have a lot of snow as you can see...but its melting finally 😆

They look great Tim!

Beny, that'll come back beautifully this year.
Doesn't look like you'll have any water restrictions this year... 😆

We took my palm hut down today too, will untie it tomorrow.

Tim,

your Trachy's look PERFECT! Great job on the protection! 😯

Beny,

Keep us updated on your Trachy, I hope it survives. PS, I think you have a glacier forming in your yard! 😀

Barb,

your Trachy looks great......all we need now is some heat. 8)

Thx guy's, it will survive im sure of that, the palms are green. But its the second winter his experienting a new technique every winter. So, its a tough guy 😆 ...Will uncover the others palms later on this week, but they look very better, cause they are in the box. Never had bad result with this method, but its for smaller palm. Me and Mike are working to find another way to protect big palms trees. Thats why i try the mummywrap.
I know this technique works well elsewhere. Just have to find the good way to do this.. 🙄

What are the PALMS!

Hi Igor, so far the only palms uncovered by Wxman, Beny and me are Trachycarpus fortunei.

My Washies are still protected at night with C-9 lights and a thin plastic cover over the "teepee".
In the afternoon, with the sun (finally) shining on them, temp reads 34C.
The benefits of clear plastic. 😀

Beny, thanks for explaining your experiments, it's really appreciated.

And here's Big Boy with the bungee cords off.
Forgot to do that yesterday 😆
Must've been celebrating his liberation. :drunken:
