Hello I have a question hopefully someone can answer. I have 2 8ft trachys and they are both blooming. one has 4 very large yellow "pouches" about ready to open, and the other palm has just one much smaller and skinnier yellow "pouch" and its opening very slowly. How and when will I be able to tell if they are male or female? I also have 2 sabal minors sending up flower stalks but thats another story.

Ok heres two pictures. One trachy has 4 very big "pouches emerging on it near the top of the trunk. The other trachy has a 2 skinnier objects starting to push out about 8 to 10 inches down from the top of the trunk.
This is the first time I have seen Trachy blooms so im sorry if these are stupid questions lol 😛

Here's pics of a male (left) and female (right). The male is a pale yellow in bloom while the female is quite green in comparison. The second pic shows cuttings in detail of male (left) and female (right). There's a very noticable difference in the two. Also, male flowers will have a pollen dust when disturbed or touched, female infloresence does not. Pod size or shape doesn't determine sex of the palm.
Thanx I noticed the one with the big blooms has a greenish color to them. The trachy with the little tinny blooms is pure yellow. Maybe I got lucky and have one of each? Well I guess I will just wait till they open all the way. How long will the blooms stay open, if one is female and male will one bloom die back before the other is ready? or do they stay open till they are pollinated?

Well one of my trachys flowers has opened up some more, I took some pics, hoping maybe barrie, turtle, or oppalm or someone who could tell me what it looks like it might be male or female.

Heres a picture of my other Trachy flower, its skinny and grows so low, I wonder if the tree needs some more fertilizer 😀

Looks like a Female - Here is another good comparison:

Thanx but I finally am 100 % possitive the first trachy is a male as they started to get more ripe you can just gently shake them and pollen poofs out and falls in your hands. The female blooms on my other Trachy havent pushed out all the way and arent ready to rippen yet.

Hello everyone thanx for being patient with me with all my questions. I removed all the flowers from my male a little over a week or 2 ago while my females blooms were still closed. I didnt want it to pollinate my female this year maybe next year. So now my female flower has been open over a week and half. I wanted to try using pollen from another palm to see if it takes. If not no big deal. Its a close relative so who knows right? I dusted the female flowers with pollen from this other palm. If it was to work, how long before I would be able to tell? and what changes would I be seeing in the flowers?

The yellow flowers will start to get rounder and take the shape of a seed and turn green then eventually blue and then brown or black. Otherwise if they do not take they will just fall off.

Thanx for the info wes. Heres is a pic of the flowers as they look today. I know it will probably take a long time to tell if it worked. I am not expecting it to have worked but I wanted to try as an experiment. Next year If this doesnt work I will just let them fertilize each other. My female has two flowers one large one in front and one small flower in the back of it. I did pollinate the front one a few times and just a little left over to pollinate the rear.
Heres todays pics. I guess Ill wait to see what happens. Heres the front flower
