My least hardy palm is the (washingtonia robusta-mex-fan palm) and the (phoenix canariensis -canary island date palm) After that the pindo palms-butia capitata and cabbage palms sabal palmetto. Should be a great challenge

What do you do for overwintering for the fan palm? I was just looking at those and debating with myself if I could make one work in Michigan.

I will use styrofoam box and lights- I have not decided what type of lighting yet although it will require more protection than trachycarpus

Thats pretty cool Mike.
I had a Tesan and a Princeps(seeds) come up after spending all winter
in the ground(min temp -12F)...I wouldn't call it naturalizing yet-
unless its there next year! 😆

Keep this thread updated on that if possible. I would love to know it's possible to keep one in Michigan. Out of curiosity, how windy is it by you? You appear to have quite a bit of protection with the surrounding buildings.

Not that windy here . I do believe that most of Michigan is warmer than Montreal

Mike, in watching one of your older vids when you had the boxes up and were checking on the palms, it looked like inside of your styro box the palm was wrapped in plastic. Is that how you do yours? Pull all the fronds up, wrap with plastic and then put your fluorescents in between the plastic wrap and the styrofoam?

Hey wheelman I do not use pklastic on the palms . they tend to sweat and then freeze with that method -avoid that in zone 5-6. What you saw in that old video is plexi-glass when I open the little square of styrofoam the backing is a cheap type of plexi-glass and some of them were even frosted. If you do this be sure to check the palms only on warm days. I did it too often and the heat escapes too quickly and does cause some leaf stress.
