I am interested to see if anyone has experience with this palm. Commonly referred to as Stone Gate Palm. If so how cold hardy? is it fast growing or slow?

I have just a small seedling that sits in my unheated coldframe year round. Too early to tell what it's capable of. It's highly unlikely these will ever become main stream or widely available. A collector palm only.

Cheers, Barrie.

These are among the slowest growing of all the Trachycarpus species I have. From what I have learned from others with this palm it is marginal planted in a zone 8 and needs protection.

They are hardy from 10 F. to 110 F. They are also the fastest Trachycarpus I have grown from seed. The ones in the photo above are 14-15 months old.

ooh, Stevea07, those are beauties.

Everyone will recall this re Gibbons and Spanner looking for seeds &imgrefurl= http://www.plantapalm.com/Vpe/palmkey/trachykey/trachykey.htm&h=489&w=320&sz=71&hl=en&start=13&tbnid=_YJsgd1sewo2ZM:&tbnh=130&tbnw=85&prev=/images%3Fq%3DTrachycarpus%2Bprinceps%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3De n"> http://www.plantapalm.com/Vpe/photos/Species/Pics/trachycarpus_martianus.jp g" target="_blank">http://www.plantapalm.com/Vpe/photos/Species/Pics/trachycarpus_martianus.jp g"/> &imgrefurl= http://www.plantapalm.com/Vpe/palmkey/trachykey/trachykey.htm&h=489&w=320&sz=71&hl=en&start=13&tbnid=_YJsgd1sewo2ZM:&tbnh=130&tbnw=85&prev=/images%3Fq%3DTrachycarpus%2Bprinceps%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den where it was disputed the plants we possess were likely to be a Princeps unless it had the typical white underside, as they do in habitat.

As with many other Trachy, hybridization seems to be almost routine.
