Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Good looking palm-you can still see the serious lean it had when it was young by all those crossed petiole bases.

Hi Barb,
it does appear that the palm leaves extend beyond the top of the protection but those leaves are really a palm tree in the background in my neighbor's yard. 😉
Hi Scott,
Jim is correct......I do have some lights inside......if temps drop I'll turn them on. We are zone 6b so only a few nights will be cold enough to kill it. Keeping it dry is the key in our area......the leaves buffer the temp drops so a quick drop to 0F with a rebound to 25F will likely not kill it (with no lights).

a palm tree in the background in my neighbor's yard
Had to look at that photo two and three times 😆
I'm a total convert to the insulating properties of leaves now that I've tried it with my Washies.
Used leaf-filled, mostly-black plastic bags.
Did'nt have any rigid wire so "enclosure" was hard to construct, really "lumpy".
I'm absolutely blown away by how warm black plastic bags get on a sunny day (overwrapped with clear plastic).
I goofed though, and placed the thermocube in one Washy's protection.
Hasn't turned on yet and it was -8C (17F) for several nights.
No sun is expected for a week (SNOW 😀 ) , so it'll cool down now.

A very nice Nanital there Tim. How long can the palm be covered up like that without natural light? I've recently planted a Nanital with a small trunk and too have put Oak leaves around the trunk but the leaves will remain free and open pending relatively mild weather.
My lowest temp so far has been 21F with three days staying below freezing and yet my leaf pile was wet just below the surface indicating good insulation 😀 I also use Bracken on most of my palms.

Hi Barb,
yes those leaves sure do moderate the temperature........when dry. If they get too wet then there are other issues. 😥
Hi Andy,
your colder than me so far this 'winter'. Our daytime highs have always hit at least 32F so far. This winter so far is like last year.....very warm. December is 5F above 'normal' so far. I kept the Trachy exposed to sun as long as I could but I had to protect it since we were forecasted to get many, many days of RAIN. I was afaid that all the wet and night below freezing would be too much. Lack of daylight does not seem to impact palms for some reason.....as long as the roots are 'cold'. The only palm which I have difficulties protecting is Sabal..........They always brown out on me even though they are green which I remove the protection.
I have another question for you Andy.........in 2010 when you had that 2 week cold spell........did Fatsia die to the ground? I'm trying to figure out which marginal plants survived and which plants died. I recently purchased a few 'hardy' Scheffleras and a couple 'hardy' Metapanex plants. How hardy are these???

One thing though about the leaves, Tim.
Glad you're using really low wattage bulbs...dry leaves and light bulbs aren't a good combo.
