I put my trachys in their boxes last weekend. Here is how I tie up the fronds for the winter. I use those big zip ties you can buy at Home Depot -- work my way from the top of the crown down -- about 4-5 fronds at a time.
My buddy Steve in the picture for scale. He is about 6'2".
I'll post pictures of the boxes later today.
The other trachy isn't as impressive yet.

Wrong 😆 both are impressive now.
I just use bungee cords on the big Trachy.
Zip ties can cut into the petioles.
Always sad to see them go into their boxes, though.

These are the fat zip ties for connecting flexible duct to hard duct. They have scratched the petioles a bit, but the trachy doesn't seem to care. Been using them since the first winter (2008).
And yes, I hate boxing them up. But in 3 months, they will be out again!

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

My "baby" i grew from 3ft tall. It now has a 12ft trunk and is growing an extra foot a year. Fortunately I don't have to protect it (yet). Trachies really start to motor once they have settled in after a few years. Wxmans trachy looks very healthy and it will not be long before you can strip the trunk to give it that more exotic look.
I see the box protection, will you be using additional heating?

Andy, I've always wondered about the pros/cons of stripping a Trachy trunk.
Would make a good new topic, and would love to see pics.
