I wish I had more knowledge of the lizards, we only have one native species here in Ontario and I've only ever seen one! I want to try to go on another 'hunt' north of Kingston where they are rare, but present, on the rocky outcrops.

I am not a huge fan of W. robusta, I love the massive, imposing, look of filifera though! Maybe I would change my mind if I went and saw robusta in habitat though! For the record, I like Sabal palmetto better than either.

Love the cactus dwarfing the 60+ year old Brahea armata.

Sure like the Manzanita ground cover...looks better than our cotoneaster.

Thanks Paul for the pics.

It's interesting how many Filibusta there are,I would wager that pure Filifera and Robusta
may as well be considered endangered-when you see a true Filifera there is just no comparison.

Possible that the trunks on those(although massive)may be a little smaller than a wild Filifera
out in the desert being that they appear to have access to underground moisture.

When I was in palm Desert, there were many "secret" oasis just like that and always water present
on the surface that came from below 😀

great plants Paul! Looks like your trip was AWESOME. That Oak in the desert is too cool. Love the coyote photo!

I belive I have one of those oaks?, I got it last year and so far it has been hardy and is growing new leaves. Not the best pic it has ice on the leaves.

Here's a better pic, this one is Quercus Turbinella

Paul good luck on your hunt. 😉

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

That's a great oak.

Know of any sources for acorns? No one seems to cultivate these!

Tim- Yes it's Chilopsis! Really a standout there.

One plant that I did not feature is the western sycamore, but it might be worth growing for the bark... It's really stunning!

Just to overwhelm your ISP, a few more pics:

Another lizard:
<a href=" http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/2735360700072511707gkKgO P"><img src=" " alt="DSC03510"></a>

And a California kingsnake:

Western Sycamore (not my pic)

Edit- Actually you can see some of the bark of a Sycamore in the kingsnake picture.

Banded cali king snake. I had one out in Calgary, just an albino stripped morph. Super timid, and escape artists....

I like how people have this perception that the SE is sand and a few cacti naturally. There is an amazing about of diversity in the proper areas! Great pics!
