Mike great video. Question with all the palms you protect with heat and light did you have to upgrade your electrical box to account for all the extra power? I never thought of a Queen palm being planted here but after seeing yours in Montreal I might consider it. Is this the first one you have tried to overwinter? Thanks for your videos.

I am not going to over-winter the Queen Palm someone was going to take it from me and never came. Generally queen palm is hardy to -6 or -7c before we see leaf burn I am guessing when it warms up we will see that damage. As for my method of heating , I use very little electricity 23 w bulbs so I have not had to change my panel. It would cost too much power to save the queen over winter more than I paid for it and it would get too cold in a box. When it gets really cold here the temps are -12c or colder in my boxes.

What a great question John I've wondered about that myself when watching Mikes videos, especially when I see the wires going here and there.

I too have two Queen palms that I just bought this fall and growth rate is impressive...afraid I will only be able to enjoy them a few years before they outgrow my highest ceilings....but Mike gives me an idea!

So Mike, what you saying is the insulation you provide the plants is such you don't need a large wattage light bulb to provide added warmth? If so, how thick is the Styrofoam your using?

I have 2 inch styrofoam R10-1.5 inch R7.5 and 3 inch whit foam R12 it depends on zone really I have it down to a science now. I o have windmill .sabals and needle palms with 14 inch rose cone styrofoam R1 value almost no help there and palms pull thru bot I wrap with frost cloth and insulation. Zone and min temp plays an important role . What works for me may not work for you. I do not have a tripod yet so have not built a box on video. Sounds like a plan for future videos.

I don't know. The $2 a day to keep that Queen alive would be worth it to me. Such a BEAUTIFUL palm!! plus it has it's own look, unlike many of the other "fan" type palms.

Mike, do you know if you can pot bound a Queen at all to keep growth slowed, or halted at a certain height?

Mike, thanks too for all of your inspiration in what you do with tropicals and palms especially. While I realize every zone is different, it's sure nice to see what can be done with some patience, and experimentation and the sharing of knowledge here on the palm site.

No I never got a tripod but I wrap all the palms differently from year to year always experimenting. But to answer your questions I sometimes give the palms plenty of protection frost cloth-burlap-bubble wrap silver insulation and mulch and sometimes nothing and they still pull thru I made a video february 2010 showing very little protection on at least 20 palms. I'll keep you in mind Mike! I think I've got a good handle on what I've got going this winter. It's once I get the big boys in my yard next year (at least that's the goal) that I'll be looking at a cost effective and labor efficient method to box them up.

One question I do have yet is how imperative is it to wrap my fronds with burlap? I'll have a little sun penetrating my structures but not much and they should be toasty warm around the tree with three strands of c-9's.

Don't use burlap use arbotex or frost cloth its cotton and that breathes better. Once burlap get wet its wet for the winter and the plants do sweat when temps get warm. You can use burlap after arbotex and bubble wrap
