Of the three twelve footers I've planted, one seems to be struggling. I thought it may have been due to poor drainage, but I read somewhere that sabal palmettos thrive in poorly draining soil? Any suggestions on trying to save it? I've hit it with chelated palm ferilizer for palm frizzle (according to label).

I keep hoping someone with my than my 2 months of experience with cabbage palms will chime in.
I guess I thought S. palmetto liked sandy soil. What are yours planted in? --Erik

Mine are planted in Red Clay... Two are doing great. This one looks as if it won't make it....

Darn.
I dug a deep hole and found hard dark clay down deep. I dug into it anyways, then layered pea gravel on it. So, my new cabbage palm is sitting on that. I added 100 lbs of play sand to the compost I put in the planting hole.
It is doing well. However, fungus is a problem for a lot of my plants (no palms, though) with all the rain we've had. Do you think you might have fungus? --Erik

I kicked it today and my foot went through the trunk. I guess a live video of my pulling the spear would be moot at this point. Palm count -1........

Poor thing...... it happens. Were the other ones planted the same way?

I have a firend in Fayetteville. Hes been complaining about the lack of rain, and the rpesence of high heat. I looked it up, yesterday he was 36C and felt liek 48C, when you take into account the hunidity. IT may have been too dry. Is there any difference between the other 2 in location, how you planted them, size, colour, or any differences at all?
