I have a sabal seedling that is from a KY plant that is about 15 years old so I feel it will have wonderful cold hardy genes but I really like the look of sabals and want a mature or semi mature plant. it just seems no one sells mature sabals, at least I can't find any. someone want to point me in the right direction. I know phil has some on his website but shipping on one that big would be a killer. prefer someplace on the east coast if I can find it.

I think Erik got his from a "mobile nursery" that toured through his part of Oklahoma a year or two ago.

Hope he chimes in here.

mobile nursery? never heard of anything like that but it sounds like a fantastic idea..wish I knew that company's name. it seems you can find a decent sized coco palm and other tropical types easier than you can find a mature sabal on the east coast.

Hi mike.... this is about as good as it gets for Sabal Minor in Europe. Not enough heat to grow well in the UK and our westerly winds usually damage the fronds. Still great plants though

Mike, the mobile nursery is a guy that rounds up tropicals in Florida and brings them to us Okies for purchase. I dunno if he actually ships anything or just has his Florida sales and the stuff he brings here when the weather gets warm. Interestingly, alot of his plants are true tropicals ( bismarckia, foxtail, bottle, hibicus, Pygmy dates etc) that are truly just really nice annuals here in OK. I've asked him to bring sabals and California fans but I guess that he doesn't grow them, or more likely, people here won't buy them, since they aren't that "taste of the tropics" people crave. It's easy to forget that we're the minority when it comes to actually growing out of zone stuff, versus the majority that just throws them away after the first hard freeze.
Anyway, tangent aside, Stevea07 is a stand-up plantsman, and probably your best bet. I got a brazoria from him last year. He sent pictures, so I got to pick the actual palm I wanted! It was shipped very well and not a damaged frond on it. His price is very good and also packaging and shipping were very good. Highly reccomend him.

Andy, that Sabal on eBay looks like the one i bought last spring here for 100 dollars. Maybe that one was slightly bigger than mine. AlsoAndy, have you ever purchased from that eBay seller? they seem to have a good assortment.

Kris, you are right. Wereally are the minority

Stevea, hi. Do you have access to any Jubaea chilensis ?

Not yet Adam but his prices and more importantly delivery charges are a lot better than from Germany the seller is from Spain but is aiming for the German Market hence everything is in German but deals with a lot of Brits.
Also I've run out of space for anymore plants 😆

Adam, I just started growing Jubaea this past year so it will be 3-4 years before they are a good size.

Steve, wish we knew your trick for reducing it to 3-4 years (from 10).
Any tips?

Yesterday I met the Monrovia rep for all Ontario, Quebec and Upstate new York. He lives just a few blocks from me here in town. Maybe I've got another source for plants!! Maybe a 4-10 year old Jubaea? hmmmmm...

Wonderful news, Adam!!!! :compress:

Ask him if he wants to increase his territory to include BC? 😆
