I would definitely protect from cold wind and frigid Arctic temps.

Isn't AG in your state,if so-maybe it's pretty well acclimated 😀

Yes, AG is here in Oklahoma. I'd like to assume that the particular ones Bryan is selling are used to the weather here; their website implies they are hardy in OKC without protection.
My microclimate is bad--full sun in summer, intense wind in winter. So, I will protect it winters, but hopefully it wouldn't need electricity.

I think their hardy to -15C? Mabey -18C.... I belive their zone 7... All i know for sure is that they are hardier then S minor... and correct me if im wrong, but their native there correct?

Jim, was that you who was telling me they grow faster or recover faster then normal S Minor?

Sabal minor is tougher than Louisiana, and sabal minor Mcurtain is the native one to Oklahoma.

My issue with the cold hardiness rating is this-

so what if a palm is hardier if it grows to slow to recover?

My Lou's have put out 5 leaves this year,well......some of them..

Bill doesn't have to worry about about growth speed because he gets Trachy like growth
out of his Needle palms! 😉

Ask him how he does it before buying a slow palm 😀

I'm hoping to take off from work Tuesday to go get it. Hopefully plant it that evening or Wednesday; we may get rain late in the week.
W and I are planning a "palm party" for Sept. 4, hoping that everyone we know who doesn't go out to a lake for labor day weekend will bring the kids over to swim. Grown ups will drink the beer W brewed or the wine she made. If any of you can drive down (I'm thinking esp. of you folks in Wichita!), let me know.

They claim that it is "nearly" as cold-hardy as Sabal minor but faster growing. 😀

Yea #1 has some purdy leaves!

I am negotiating with Amazing Gardens in Oklahoma city for a 30 gallon Sabal "Lousiana".
From what I can tell, this should require fairly minimal winter protection.
Does anyone have experience with this palm?

I have a small one growing in an obscure spot behind a large shrub. I cannot remember where I procured it. Maybe eBay. Anyway, so far I have protected it by throwing some leaves on top and then putting a large ceramic planter over it.

Yours, being larger, will obviously be tougher. Nonetheless, I would heed the 2-3 years protection rule.

probably hasn't seen REAL winter weather!
