Sabal birmingham seems OK after winter with a low of 7.2F in the greenhouse. Some tip burn.

Good pic Tim.

I've got both a 'Birmingham' (F3, I presume) and a 'Brazoria' (aka Sabal minor...) to plant this spring. Looks like I'll want to keep their enclosure above -10C if I want intact foliage!

Hi Paul & Jim,

I planted mine last summer.......how many leaves can I expect? I hope I get at least 2 new leaves.

Very good, Tim. I'm glad you protected it.
My own are tiny and so were all inside. Phew!
Birmingham owners here in OK are mum, so I suppose they are waiting to see.

My guess would be 0. 😉

Seriously, there is quite a range in the growth
speed of individual plants.

Tim- I'd suspect that you can expect 2 leaves until it establishes, then I would suspect you'll get 4-5 per year thereafter. I would also like to point out that I base this on nothing but intuition.

I'm hoping for 3 leaves each on my new palms, but if they act like S. minor I will be lucky to get 2!

Tim

Maybe you will get lucky and get a faster one!

One I really like for growth speed in S.Louisiana,
I am also guessing Brazoria might be a faster Sabal
but mine is still to small to tell....hopefully some divided leaves
this year out of it and a corresponding pick-up in growth speed 😀

All Sabals seem to be dead slow in my climate......I think they like heat which we don't get often......too close to the coast. I still have the greenhouse over it and it warm up quick....hopefully this will warm up the soil a bit.
