Just curious who here has Windmill Palms that you have in containers and what kind of luck you've had vs in the ground. My two in the ground and over wintered Windmills are doing great, One big potted doing fine, but smaller one in pot not so much and it's been in a pot for over a year. Had one other one(first one I ever ordered online) survived for a couple of years then "dried up" and died. Looks like I might loose this other one, unless I can figure out a place outside for it..and close enough to electrical to over winter.

Scott,
You'll likely recall my big boy Trachy was in pot(s) for 36+ years...yup!...before planting it out a few years ago.
It never looked like it was going to croak except when I had it in a blistering hot and very windy south spot.
Now it gets half-day shade.
The trick is to keep the roots from getting too hot in a pot.
Roots/soil shouldn't be the same as air temp, so putting the potted Trachy into a larger empty pot keeps the sun from heating up the pot the Trachy's in.
Maybe get a longer extension cord? 😆 😆 😆

If you drink, don't drive. Don't even putt.
I just went ahead and planted it in the ground and we'll see what happens for the rest of the summer. I had a Needle palm thhat didn't make it through the winter so dug that up and replaced it with the Windmill.

You'll be glad you planted it, Scott.
Needles are far from my favorite, and I gave mine away.
Impossible to weed around the base with all those deadly needles.
Was running out of bandaids. 😆
Let us know how it does now that its roots are cooler.
Maybe give it a dose of Epsom Salts for a quick tonic.

Typically how much Epsom salts does one put down? And how often?

I usually give things a tonic of Epsom Salts once a summer.
I use 2 tablespoons in 5 gallon watering can, stir, and drench soil.
Usually a good green-up of fronds within 2 weeks.
But because of salt build-up in pots, I wouldn't recommend using it more frequently.

Thanks Barb, will give that newly planted in the ground Windmill a dose this weekend.

The cooler soil (versus air temps) around the roots will help as much as anything.
