Thx for the pics Barb...nice to see how the other peoaple in the world protect their palms. This one in Utah is a crazy one. He must use heat tape, Washingtonia in that kind off winter, only wrapped...good job.

That article about the protection in England makes me sad...

And that winter protection in Japan is somewhat aesthetically pleasing.

I'm curious whether those Washingtonias in Seattle survived since I want to plant a few of them and protect them next winter (assuming I still live in the area). The winter of 2008/2009 was unusually cold (a once-in-a-decade occurrence). It was below freezing for about a week and there was lots of snow.

I spotted this little guy a couple of weeks ago in downtown Seattle on a rainy night (sorry for the poor quality):

Here's what it looked like over a year ago in the summer of 2011: maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=47.611272,-122.339987&spn=0.001345,0.002846&t=m&z=19&layer=c&cbll=47.611346,-122.340102&panoid=1cb4IxghZEZbTq4Szi6weA&cbp=12,65.01,,1,15.73 (Yes, Google maps has blurred out the trunk for privacy reasons, I guess) I'll have to watch it this winter to see if any protection is put over it.

I like the idea of using the palms to support their own protection.

As mine get bigger and more insulation and heat are needed, this
is a way to move the other direction-less is more.

Thanx Barb. Really is a timely subject. I like how some are as aesthetically pleasing as they are functional.

Jim I too like the idea of the palm supporting/being the protection frame. I also like the idea of 5F hardy Pindos (least that's what they look like)! Wonder where I can get one LOL?

robocaesar,

those Washingtonias in Seattle survived

My guess is that with Seattle's rain, and borderline summer heat, they're either dead or going to be.
Washies hate wet cold.

A concrete planter will keep the roots wet and cold all winter too.

Trachycarpus would've been successful.

Great post Barb.

What gets me is how fast people are too bad mouth other people's garden/yards. In the post "Seattle" It's not that bad of an eye soar yet read the comments from the bolg. 😑
This is another reason for me to hate social Idea's like "Homeowner's Association" just my oppinion. πŸ˜†

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Love it!

I seen in a very old plant book once that said they done this for over a hundred years? in Northern Japan. 8) The book was "I think from the 30's". 8)

Exactly, Aaron!
HAs are so, well, constricting (to put it mildly).
All the folks looking out their windows not minding their own business.
My widowed Mom lives in an 18-unit HA...the rules are brutal and everybody watches what everyone else is doing, then complain about it to the HA.

And that Japan protection, I've heard that 100 year story too.
That protection has been done in winter since day one.
Can you just imagine the PATIENCE of someone putting those little "skirts" up on the trunks so carefully?
Probably had to make the little "skirts" first, too. :confused2:
