Phil Bergman of Jungle Music has created a list based on his customer's comments of what survives (albeit in So.Cal 🙄 ), as well as his own research.

http://www.junglemusic.net/palmadvice/palms-coldhardy2.htm

But we Northerners have to remember it's often the DURATION of cold that finishes off a palm...i.e. 3 months of winter.

Excellent document, Phil!

I agree Barb, palm hardiness is complex.......more than just low temp. My Sabal minor is already fried and out low was only 7F and this winter has been one of the warmest ever.

Nice post, Barb. It's good that Jungle Music made a list, but it should be a more accurate list! 😆 Perhaps Phil is going by some of the general hardiness info out there, and hasn't incorporated the findings about palms that survived more extreme temps. Either way, this will be a better reference for people than simply saying "cold hardy" 😆

I agree he's being conservative on some of the temps, but because customers tend to not listen to what merchants say 😆 😆 , it's probably good to err on the side of caution.

And naturally, being in SoCal it never occurred to his customers to protect their palms with lights and a makeshift shelter.

I probably wouldn't either if I lived down there.
