I will say it pays to cozy up to your local tech center's greenhouse guy. After buying three dwarf Brazilian bananas earlier this spring, I had two of them start to look really haggard for whatever reason. I was by there today and managed to catch him there and asked if I could get a few to replace my dying ones and he said that was fine and to just go pick some out. After grabbing 6 of them and loading them in my car I went back in and told him if he wants to get rid of the rest that I would take them and just plant them in my back yard. Surprisingly he said that was fine and I ended up getting 25 or so dwarf Brazilian and red dwarfs. Here's some photos of them in front of my canna garden and the rest in my banana patch. Lastly, a quick snapshot of my new leaf and spear coming up on my larger windmill.
Mixed in there is my canna Stuttgart, mekong giant and bird of paradise canna.
Lastly, looking at the palm pic, the new leave that is opening looks yellow.... do I need to give it something in terms of fertilizer? Is that a lack of some mineral by chance?

Keep me posted on your Mekong giant-
I have one similar in size I think but it is moving now-
they are supposed to be super fast.

I have one similar in size I think but it is moving now-
they are supposed to be super fast.
I'm hoping that now that I'm sticking these bananas in the ground that they'll do better.... I don't have much luck with container grown.

That palm leaf isn't yellow.
New fronds always look somewhat "transparent" (for lack of a better word) as they come up.
Great healthy looking palm.
Nice score on the free plants.

Anyone know how much growth I can expect from these this year? The greenhouse has a dwarf brazilian in the ground where these were and it's got to be 8 foot with a 8-10 inch thick trunk, but I'm guessing it's like that b/c it's in ideal conditions of heat and humidity with no wind... I gotta itch for a greenhouse. 🙂 But I need a back yard shed first with is going to cost me some coin as well.

The new spears of windmill palms always push up yellowish. This is because they haven't begun photosynthesizing yet. Once the leaf opens, you will notice it turn green fast. Don't worry! 🙂

If it's not from being in the enclosure,it usually just means your
plant is pushing them out faster than they can open for business!

Looks like you are starting your own Banana Plantation there very cool. I had a couple of those last year and they took forever to grow.. Water and fert add fertiliozer every week for best results . Bananas are heavy feeders

I've got "banana fuel" ordered today. We'll see. They seem to be moving along. Even some of the ones that had weepers fall out of the pots in the greenhouse and got dry are now opening their cigar leaf and showing the next one to come.
Does anyone know about when I need to think about digging these in the fall? Do I want to remove them before the first frost?

Only if you want to preserve foliage-if your just storing them you can let the frost finish them...

My mekong is pushing a leaf out every 2-3 days now. I'm hoping this thing speeds up and starts going. My others are really starting to move as well. I also just picked up a I'm going to guess 30 inch tall basjoo that I'm trying to figure out where to put it..... I'm excited for that one as it's my biggest specimen so far but I have to get it in the ground and out of it's pot!
