I went outside to transplant my new Washingtonia robusta, and I noticed all of the outer fronds are drooping down and turning brown. At first I thought it was because some outer ones do die, but now the only thing left is the 2 main spears.
I also noticed some of the roots at the very bottom are dry and dead. Is this normal?
Don't know if I should be concernced or I should just leave it be. I can take some pics tomorow if needed.

Not sure what the issue is.......likely under watering or over watering?

Andy,
You state it's a new plant.
Wonder if it got frozen before you got it.
But, agree with Tim, could be a watering issue.
Could the rootball's soil be so compacted/hard that no water got into the root zone?
If soil has pulled away from the pot sides, watering the plant just sends all the water down the inside edges and out the bottom.
If that's the case, I use a small dowel or stick to gently poke down through the soil in several areas, allowing water to get into the root area.
A photo might help narrow it down.

If you drink, don't drive. Don't even putt.
Figured I should post an update- I transplanted the Washy, and after 2-3 months it has TAKEN OFF. It is growing rapidly in full sun.
Barb, I think you were exactly right It was very compacted and root bound, combo of the trip home from SC, then placing it in full sun- It was getting choked out with no water getting to the actual roots (I think thats why some were dead and dry at the bottom).
Still drops a few of the outer fronds, but I think that's just what Washys do.

Thanks for the update Andy.
Was wondering if it had croaked.
Glad it didn't.
A new pic would be good.
