Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

I brought the palm in. I will take a photo of it. The palm does not look to good and I had to cut some fans off.

70f today, although those days are numbered. I heard the Great Lakes area near Bufallo got a snow dump. Man... that's a drag for those folks.

We had our first snow that stuck this morning here in Edm, Alb but it has already melted. It was on the ground for a couple hours. My windmill palm doesn't seem to mind the below 0c wet weather yet. It seems to be still growing out a new fan. It has seen around -4c as a low so far and its in a pot. I need to bring it in if it gets much lower then that because of it not being able to handle much cold weather in a pot, but once I plant it next spring or the spring after, it will see some brutal weather in an Edmonton winter.

nlafrance ... you're Trachycarpus is a long way out of it's growth range in Edmonton. Some folks even in zone 7 experience damage and periodic killing. How do you plan on keeping this alive? Winter protection methods would be extreme in zone 3a.

Cheers, Barrie.

Yea i dont mind that its practically impossible, i still wanna try. Just ask Allen how fun it is to try in Edmonton. We have of the most hours of sunlight of any Canadian city if that helps. And protection won't be needed until late Nov. or early Dec. to probably late Feb or early March. If this warming trend continues, there is basically only a few stretches every year where I will need to protect the windmill. Last year we only reached the -20 mark i think it was 5 times so thats 5 days of the year where i'll need some really mega protection. Much of the winter had days the reached above zero. Besides that I have seen some remarkable performance from the trachy family in Colorado where they have been testing these palms down to -25c so I stay optimistic. These palms will become hardier and hardier the more we try them in colder locations. It may take a long time but Im young so I don't mind trying for another 50 years. Why do you guys try to get washingtonia's and phoenix palms growing in Vancouver? Its obviously because you love them so much and want a challenge. Its the exact same feeling I have for my palms and I won't give up just because everyone says its impossible.

Nate keep the faith anything can be grown if proper protection measures are used. I would think that the first "2" years would need protection after -12c 10f. or you will see complete defoliation.

I feel for you man.
Down where I am it is very likely we won't see snow at all.
nlafrance3 Your trachy should easily handle -4C. I would get concerned around -7 or -8C in a pot. Well below that if in the ground with overhead protection.

Hey Nate; Chin up. keep up trying to grow palms.

I'd hate to be the only crazy in Edmonton growing Palms.

Allen

You don't have to be crazy to grow palms in Alberta..... But it helps

Oct 27 and no need to take the trachy inside yet, wonderful! Things are looking good right now for the trachy in the pot. I would love to keep it outside for most of November except for the small cold snaps we normally get. I posted new pics of it even though there hasn't been a great deal of progress since I last took pictures, but Allen you should go look at the washy and sabal, im sure you're intested in their progress. I grouped all of the pictures in seperate albums for easy viewing and they now have progress updates from may, august, sept, and oct. Excessive? Perhaps, but not for a palm grower in Edmonton.
